4th floor common room - Dinner-ish

Twas a silly thing to be nervous about cooking. She didn't do it much at home either, there was little time and she was out doing Dog work when supper came. She'd time now. Plenty of it and it seemed useful to find out what those buttons in the kitchenette meant. Which was the goal of this visit to the common room with Jono. To figure out the cooking thing.

Just don't cook my fish, Pounce warned in what would be cat talk to anyone else but Beka. He took the safer route and jumped on the couch for a nap.

She ignored him and glanced at Jono. "You don't happen to know how to make apple fritters?" she asked.

[Jono modded with permission. And the post is open as common rooms are. Feel free to come mock the technology challenge girl.]

Jono squinted a little, leaning over to inspect them. And then he shook his head.

//They ought to still be good on the inside, even if the outside's a little dark,// he decided. //Pick off what isn't good anymore, if it bothers yer.//

He reached for a plate and a sheet of paper towel, setting the paper down on the dish before nudging it over for her to dump the fritters onto.

//They do,// Jono nodded, eyeing them for a moment and wrestling down that initial surge of 'want' as he turned his attention toward getting the fish ready to fry. //The nutmeg was a nice touch, I think.//

//Of course. Farmers from outside of town have to sell their produce somehow, after all.// He shrugged, making certain that the basket was back in the fryer properly before putting the battered fish in. //I never was much for them myself, really. Whatever I needed, I could get just as easily at shops like the Turtle and Canary.//

Or in pubs! Or at chip stands.

Jono waited a moment before dumping a handful of the frozen fries into the fryer along with the fish. They really didn't need much more than that, considering they were just cooking for Beka, after all.

//There's not nearly the same sort of life here, is there?// It was vibrant enough, certainly, but even he couldn't deny that he missed the bustle of his old stomping grounds in London, no matter what unpleasant memories came along with them.

//It's no London, either.// His gaze was fixed on the food, now, what he was cooking. The oil was still hot from the fritters, so this wouldn't take very long at all. Especially with the fish already thawed. //Miss yer pigeons, gel?//

Fandom had them, sure, but nothing like any densely populated city might.

//It's clear across the ocean,// Jono replied, nodding faintly. //Granted, it helps that we're on the coast, but it still isn't exactly a quick jaunt there.//

Though, in retrospect, it wasn't nearly as far as wherever it was that she'd come from, was it?

Jono's eyebrow twitched upward a little.

//There's a loaded sort of question,// he noted. //It depends how yer choose to travel, nowadays. A person could make the trip in less than a day. By ship? Considerably longer. Weeks? Months? Is the ship equipped with a motor, or is it going by sail?//

There was no such thing as an easy answer nowadays, was there?

//It took me less than a day, from Ireland, which is... near enough to London, I suppose. But the trip involved a flight, and a portal, and...// He balked a little. This still sounded insane, even to him. //And some mist.//

Jono shrugged. My, that deep fryer was extra fascinating when he was saying things that made him sound insane.

//We were there, myself and a... team that I'm on, to investigate the disappearance of the ancestral castle of one of my teachers. Turns out, this mist that settled around the area was the culprit.//
furnaceface: (Sideways look)

Jono shook his head, lifting the basket from the oil to make certain that he wasn't burning anything. So far, so good. He put it back in again.

//No. It was gone. There was a pit where the foundation used to be.//
furnaceface: (Wtf?)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-09-22 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
//Put it someplace else, so far as I can figure.// Jonothon shrugged. //One of my teammates was idiot enough to try to touch the blasted stuff. It stole him away, and next I knew, I was jumping in after him like the barmy plonker that I am.//

He glanced over his shoulder to look at her, shrugging again. //Next I knew, I was standing in an airport with a ticket to this place in my hand.//
furnaceface: (Casual conversation)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-09-22 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
//Everett did mention that he'd seen... Elves, or something of the like, inside of the mist before he reached out to it,// Jono agreed, readying another plate-with-paper before pulling out the basket and upending it. //I didn't see anything of the sort, but at least I knew it wasn't exactly a brilliant plan to go and touch it.//
furnaceface: (Cold Shoulder)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-09-22 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Jono was going to shake his head, now. Reach for the salt, sprinkle some onto the chips. There. See? A culinary masterpiece.

//He wasn't,// he replied. //The others were running after us, so...// And a shrug. //The best I can do is assume that the mist sent him someplace safe as well, and the rest of the team has found him by now.//

Not that they'd found Jono, no, but sometimes it was nice to live with his headspace a few steps to the left of common sense.

//Fourteen years does make it a little difficult to send them a message by post,// he agreed. //If I'd ended up in the past, that might be different. But I can't very well contact them if they're back in time.//

Not that he'd tried. But it wasn't as though he knew that Fandom's mail system was a little more than normal, really.
