The Deck, Early Saturday Morning

Winter was a while off yet, but it was considerably cooler than a few months ago. Naturally, this called for hot coffee. It was a good thing then that Edmund had been into town to the bakery and coffee shop. There was a large Thermos of hot coffee with some disposable cups and a box of pastries on the table if anyone came by. For now, Edmund was content to sit back in his deck chair and enjoy his breakfast.

"The first it happened, Luke was sleeping over. I don't know which of us was more surprised," Jo explained. "Ex-boyfriend. He went home after he graduated last year, another galaxy's a bit too far for a long distance relationship."

"That would be," he tried to find the right word, "overwhelming to wake up to."

Jo snickered. "Just a bit, yeah."

"Do you stay in contact? With Luke."

"On and off," Jo said. "Emails here and there mostly. There's this whole rebellion against an evil empire thing going on in his galaxy, kind of takes up time."

"Busy man," he nodded. "I suppose we have that to be thankful for here. We wouldn't really have time to go and visit the ball pit if we had a rebellion against an evil empire to run."

"Not unless there were secret documents in it or something."

"I don't know if I would hide secret documents in a ball pit. A five year old might find them and draw on them with crayon."

"But no one would ever think to look for them there," Jo pointed out.

"So you're saying it's a precarious balance between very clever secrecy and being outwitted by a child."

"Exactly," Jo said. "I know that when I take over the world, I'll have a four-year-old advisor to point out flaws in my plans."

"Who better than to point out gaping holes in strategy?" he agreed not at all seriously. "Though now I know your secret hiding place, so I'm a threat to security."

"Not so," Jo replied. "I just need to keep you on my side through judicious use of bribery and universal health care."

"How can I say no to an offer for universal health care? Which isn't to say that I won't, just that I can't think of a reason to. I suppose it would depend on what other bribery was involved."

"It'd would have to be something I could deliver," Jo said. "Doesn't look too good for me to be making promises I can't keep."

"And something that appeals to me," he pointed out. "No point in trying to bribe me with something I'm not interested in. I think you have your work cut out for you there."

"So the personal cabana boy's out then?"

"While a thoughtful bribe, not exactly something I'd put to good use."

"At least not in public."

Edmund coughed in response. He might have choked on a small amount of coffee. "And it would be a waste of talent, so the cabana boy might be best used as your own personal servant."

"To go along with the pool-boy and the personal masseuse," Jo agreed. "I could always get you a pony."

"I think Phillip, my horse at home, would be terribly put out if I tried to replace him with a pony." An amused smile formed as he thought of Phillip's possible reaction. "But I couldn't well turn down a pony."

"I could even through in a monkey-pony as well," Jo added. "You like monkeys and you like ponies, right?"
