The Deck, Early Saturday Morning

Winter was a while off yet, but it was considerably cooler than a few months ago. Naturally, this called for hot coffee. It was a good thing then that Edmund had been into town to the bakery and coffee shop. There was a large Thermos of hot coffee with some disposable cups and a box of pastries on the table if anyone came by. For now, Edmund was content to sit back in his deck chair and enjoy his breakfast.

Finishing taking Jet for a walk, Jo came up onto the deck. "Morning," she said as Jet trotted over to Edmund.

"Good morning," Edmund replied. He set his coffee down to give Jet a good scratch and pat. "You're out early. I think most of the school is still asleep."

"Someone's an early riser," she said, nodding at Jet. "I'm used to sleeping a lot later."

"You causing trouble?" he asked Jet, who very probably didn't understand him. "You're welcome to some coffee and pastries to make up for the lack of sleeping in."

Jet just wagged his tail in reply as Jo raided the coffee. "Thanks," she said, sipping from her mug. "You're a prince. Metaphorically, anyway."

"I think that counts as a demotion, but thanks. How's your school year going? Any classes you're regretting already?"

"Not really," Jo replied. "But then I've only got the two. How about you?"

"Three. No regrets yet, though I'm undecided about Defence Against the Dark Arts." Certain things about magic still unnerved him.

"Professor Black seems okay," Jo said with a shrug. "Still not sure about that whole thing with the boggart though."

"I'm sure they had their reasons for it. It was..." He shrugged. "Not real." Troubling was what he'd intended to say. "Did you sign up for any of the clubs?"

"Real, or not, it was kind of creepy," Jo said. She shook her head. "Nothing particularly caught my interest, though I hear you're running fencing, right?"

Edmund nodded and left Jet to sniff around while he drank some more coffee. "It wasn't what I expected, but it's been educational. Mostly girls who haven't touched a sword before in their lives. A few others though. They're learning."

Somehow... Merlin hadn't been aware of the deck. Yes, this was probably not the best thing, but he'd never been out here so one could hardly blame him!

"Hello Merlin," Edmund replied, looking up. "I haven't seen you in a while. How goes?"

"Well." Kinda sorta. "No brownies, at least?"

"No brownies is certainly a good start," Edmund agreed. "Chuck tells me he's now on his best behaviour. Going to church even."

"Is he doing anything to the church?"

"I haven't heard anything bad, but I understand the church has a caretaker again, so perhaps he's protecting it."

"Are you certain it's really Chuck?"

"He seems as arrogant as ever despite that. I'd be more inclined to believe he's up to something than being possessed."

"I suppose people are able to change..."

"They are," he said, tone suddenly serious. "And I hope he has seen the light and is trying to change. But it doesn't hurt to keep a healthy dose of scepticism on hand in case it's a ruse."

"Have you gone to the church as well? Arthur and Francine seem to enjoy it."
