4th floor common room - Late morning

Mayhap she should have asked Jonothon for help. It'd have been faster, of that she was certain. She'd seen one of the instructors of the gym insert the shiny disc in a black box and then there'd been images on the television. So far, she'd managed to turn on the television. And then she was stuck.

"You could help," she accused Pounce.

You need to learn to find your own way, Pounce told her, staying on his spot on the coffee table to observe her.

Sarden cat. "I'd not have taught this is of great importance," she told Pounce and randomly started pushing buttons on the black boxes underneath the television.

She'd hit a button and the stereo installation lit up, music suddenly blaring through the common room. Pounce yowled and Beka hit the button again. Silence returned instantly, but Beka thought she'd might be deaf for the rest of the day.

[Open, of course. Pounce's responses not for radio, please. Since no one but Beka can understand him.]

"You're supposed to educate people in something you don't know?" Jonas asked, letting his confusion at that logic show in his voice.

Mayhap she should talk to Dimitri and not believe the instructors. "Tis why they gave me these to learn and I've had to follow their class. I prefer baton practise."

"Are you a fast learner?" Jonas wondered, still not looking like he saw the logic in making someone teach something she didn't know.

She shrugged a shoulder. "I do well enough. You have to be as a Dog or you'll not stay alive for long."

"I would be absolutely awful," he confessed with a small smile. "I think a piece of toast could teach better than I could."

He was on a toast kick, apparently. That or comparing himself to something he knew seemed better than comparing himself to something he didn't.

"I don't know," she grinned. "I think you'd do just fine jumping in place and waving your arms around like a looby."

"Is that all it is?" he asked, surprised. He'd have thought it would have been more difficult as all things on this island seemed to be.

"That's what they made me do in the class," Beka shook her head. "Looby," she repeated. It was the best word she had for it. "Do you want to learn?"

"Do you think I should?" he wondered, looking warily at the television. "Is it supposed to be helpful other than making me look like a...looby?"

The word was unfamiliar save for the times he'd heard her use it.

"Silly," she clarified and she shook her head. "I can think of better ways to keep in shape. Running's useful and they've machines to build up muscle if that's what you want."

"I used to ride a bicycle," he said, miming it for her in case she didn't know what one was. "Is there anything like that?"

She nodded. "There's one, but it goes nowhere. The instructor said real bikes let you get some place fast."

"It wasn't always fast," Jonas recalled, nodding anyway, "but it was consistent. They were the only means of transportation in the Community."

He was leaving out the planes for now.

"No horses then," she guessed since he didn't seem to know many animals.

"No," he said and shaking his head. "I know what a horse it but I've never seen one. Is that what you used?"

"No," she said instantly, here eyes widening a little. "I don't like horses much. I'll keep my feet on the ground."

"What did you use?" Jonas asked curiously.

"My feet," she laughed and shrugged a shoulder. "We've got carriage too, that won't require you to sit on the horse." She did not like horses.

"Did others where you're from use horses?" he asked. "Just not you?"

She nodded. "Nobles do and merchants. Or mules," she said. "Some carriages are pulled by oxen. Horses are expensive. They cost a lot to buy and to feed. Then you'd need the room to place them. Not a lot of folk in the Lower City have them. My Lord does and my brothers like them well enough. Willes wants to be a royal messenger and Nilo's always in the stables too."

"Why don't you like them?" he asked. "Did you fall off one once?" It seemed like a logical leap.

Beka shook her head. "I don't like them as much as they don't like me," she assured Jonas. "You'd understand if you'd seen one panic. They'll not stop for aught."

"They're dangerous?" he asked carefully.

"They're large enough to be," she said. "Tis fine if their riders knows them well enough, but they can get spooked."

"I should stay away from them," Jonas decided, eyes widening a touch. "I wouldn't know how to deal with a large animal and keep them calm."
