Having handwavilyomg put up some very, very poorly spelled signs with Tara for people to know about this, Merlin was more than happy to get things started.

If only because there had been some rather insistent candy yesterday and he'd tried some out of pity and now believed Halloween may be evil. So, there was that.

But he had everything all set up and hopefully there wouldn't be an attack of some also horrible sweet from his time. But this was Fandom, so that was an actual concern. Damn Fandom.

Don't worry. There was a long list of people that Karla would go to cry on before she would go to Arthur. In fact, 'kindly-looking strangers' were ranked higher on the list than he was.

"Neither should anyone," she replied softly. "But I appreciate your offer of help I'll need it during the unicorn-slaughter. I hope I'll never have need it--but if I do, I hope it's to help me burn the building to the ground and then sow salt amongst the ashes."

She was joking about the salt.

"That sounds like a waste of salt," Arthur had to point out, being the medieval boy he was. He had a slight smile on his face, though. He inclined his head once, not quite a bow, and said, "I hope you won't, either. But I'm pleased to see you're managing. Someone needs to stand strong in the face of such horrors." He didn't know exactly what they'd been, but he'd been able to tell from Francine that they'd been bad.

Karla shivered a bit, telling herself it was just the cool fall evening. "I just don't understand why they could do those things to children," she murmured softly, glancing away. "They were just little girls. How could people do those things to little girls?"

If Karla had known just how sparing of the details Francine had been, she never would have kept talking. But she was trying to understand, which meant asking for peoples' thoughts on the nature of evil.

... Yeah. For that, Arthur didn't have an answer. He might have had one had he thought to link it to his own rather questionable atrocities on orders of his father, but-- lingering had never been his strong suit. "Some are just untrustworthy, honourless-- greedy and lustful," he said, finally, digesting the little girls part with more than a spot of horror. "It's more important to stop them than to understand their motives. There are lines you don't cross."

"Except people do cross them," Karla murmured. "And while you kill those who do--" justice was a little quick in Kaeleer "--that doesn't do much for the ones they hurt or killed. But figuring out what sends people towards that line and how you can stop them before they get there is important, if you can. I don't ever want such a thing to occur in Glacia, and I'll take whatever steps I can to prevent it. I just wish I knew how."

Why didn't being a Queen come with a guidebook?

Seriously, Arthur, take a look at your own back catalogue of dead magic users.

"But I can hardly fault your dedication. The best we can do is to make sure all are under some kind of protection." A pause. "Especially the children."

"Actually, back home, that isn't a guarantee," Karla said, a little wryly. "There is a difference between the body's death and true death. On the plus side, sometimes you really do get to kill someone twice."

Sometimes gallows humor was all Karla had.
