Magic Reserves, Wenesday Afternoon, The Preserve

When people began arriving at the meeting today, they would see that things were a bit different than usual today. For one thing, the snack table has it's usual assortment of warm beverages, but was missing the normal variety of snacks and there were a handwavey number of wooden chests piled off to the side, each one sporting a heavy iron padlock on the front.

"Greetings," Karla said, looking a bit more composed than she had at the last meeting. "We've got a fair bit to do today, so we should probably get started quickly. First, we have a talk from Tara, who was kind enough to volunteer this week," she paused to give Tara a grateful smile, "and then, we have an activity."

Merlin nodded and stepped forward. "Inside these chests is... pie." Oh, it was so spooky and magical sounding. "But, as you see, they're rather firmly locked up. So, the exercise today will be to get the contents of the box--unharmed--using whatever skills you have at your
disposal."

Mmm, pie. "Fresh-baked," Tony added. "And if you get one out, it's all yours."

Karla was really regretting that the three of them hadn't had enough time to bake the pies themselves, but hopefully J,GoB pies would be an acceptable substitute. "So, let's give Tara our attention--and a pie of her own for volunteering--and then we'll see how well your pie-retrieving skills are."

Arthur wasn't particularly saddened. He didn't come to these meetings for the food, after all. Instead, he was, as per usual, lurking and paying rapt attention.

Jonothon could get to the pie easily enough with a well-placed dose of psionic energy.

He just wasn't going to, because, for one, he didn't eat. And for another, that would involve pulling down the bandages.

Karla had actually thought about Jono while she'd been out getting pie. Not wanting to make too much of a big deal out of it, she sidled up to him and called in a smaller version of the same chests, complete with padlock. "No pie," she said, offering it to him. "So if you wanted to try..."

Zack looked... kinda like he'd been running for hours and hours and hours yesterday and possibly on into the wee hours of the morning even if he'd been told he could stop at midnight.

He stopped yawning when he heard that there was pie in those chests. Oooooooo. That made up for the lack of cookies at yesterday's reserves meeting!

Boredom and restlessness usually meant Kennedy had to go find something to do, and every now and then on Wednesdays that meant checking out the magic reserves to see if the crazy talk (sorry, magic users, that's what it still was to her) made any more sense this week.

It might, at that. Well, she'd be paying attention, at least. She wasn't Arthur, so she wasn't lurking, but she did take her semi-usual observer's spot off to one side.

Also, pie, a bonus that meant she'd be doing an extra couple of laps of the island tomorrow, but a bonus nonetheless. You know, if she could get to it. Which because someone fails at reading comprehension wasn't going to happen.

Yes, this was not terribly unusual for her.

Given what else was scheduled for the day, Tara didn't miss the snacks.

Tara + public speaking was already an unlikely combination. Tara + public speaking + food was absolutely certain to lead to disaster. She'd be over here, reviewing her notes and hoping nothing would go wrong.

Francine was both sad at the lack of tasty snacks, and frustrated as usual by the fact that she didn't have anything that would be useful for the exercise. Aside from the ability to walk into town and buy a crowbar at the hardware store.

Tara hadn't volunteered to talk as much as she'd let herself be talked into it. She spoke a little too softly and rather rapidly until she was perhaps halfway into her presentation.

"Hi. I'm Tara. Which, uh, you already know, so ... anyhow, at home the - the kind of witch I am is called a Wiccan. That's a religion" -- and she was finally, thank the Gods, talking loudly enough that people more than two feet away might be able to hear her -- "B-but more than that, it means we try to use magic in ethical ways. It's -- it's big. You can't waste it on things you just don't want to do the regular way, or try to pull in dark powers. If you do, you'll get hurt."

"Um, my mother is a witch and she's been teaching me stuff since I was little. Another way my world is different is that -- it's not like, you have magic or you don't, like in Barry Porter. It's more of an art, like playing a musical instrument. Anyone can pick up a book and learn scales, but to get really good you h-have to have the gift and work hard. I'm nowhere near as good as I want to be someday. In my world magic can be used for charms, spells, glamours, telekinesis... nothing really weird."

She drew a breath and smiled a bit at the group before going on. Only friends here, she reminded herself.

"I see auras too. It's, uh ... basically I see your energy. Your mood. I can tell if s-someone is possessed, but I can't see if someone isn't human to start with. And some people are way easier to read than others."

"So ... that's it. Questions?"

She'd be happy to answer questions; she may have looked like she wanted to flee, but then she always sort of looked that way.

Oh, come on! Where Zack was from, there were treasure chests everywhere. In caves, in houses, in the middle of big, otherwise empty fields! This was easy!

... Okay, so the lock made it a bit tricky, but he had that Mug materia that Yuffie had given him for his birthday, and so a good swing at the lock was really all it took anyhow. Victory!

Dinah was pretty sure the box would break easier than the lock. But then there would be smushed pie! So just to make it a little more difficult, she settled in to use her telekinesis to pick the lock with a paperclip. La la la. Pie pie pie any minute now.

Tony was snacking on a slice of cherry pie. What? It had been damaged in the trip from town and was therefore useless for this exercise!
