Dorm Roof, Sunday Evening

It was a bit chilly out, but that didn't really deter Emma. She actually sort of liked fall, with the wind and the leaves, especially now that she didn't have to worry about finding a place to sleep once it got cold.

She let her lungs fill with smoke before exhaling, glancing down at the latest assignment for her AP Algebra course. It was nights like this that made her wonder why she'd agreed to the extra work of distance-classes in the first place. She could be out at the bar, but no, she had more homework to do.

Maybe if she was lucky, someone would show up and give her an excuse to ignore her numbers for a bit.

Jack liked the roof, and he liked it better when it had decent company on it.

"Miss Frost," hoe noted, with a smile. "Working on anything important?"

"Not so fascinating that it's more important than good company," she joked, looking up from her textbook. "Good evening, Mr. Priest."

"Good evning," Jack said, sitting down next to Emma and patting his pockets. "Loan me a smoke? I have no plans tonight."

"I think I could manage a loan," she replied, reaching into her purse to toss him her pack. "I think it's a night for being lazy and having no plans. I can't find the desire to focus on my work."

Beka had decided she wanted to go up to the roof, and George being a smart lad and not wanting to get bitten, was not averse to following her and opening the doors that required opposable thumbs.

"G'evenin' lass," he said, seeing Emma. Didn' do t'be rude straight out or anything.

"George," she drawled, smirking at him slightly over her text.

Yes, she'd been mean and lecture-y. But he ought to understand that you didn't mess with a girl's sister.

Said sister was bounding up to her in dog form to say hello.

"Am I interruptin' ye?"

PUPPY! Emma would not squee, she would not squee, she would not...

...yeah, homework was abandoned in favor of PUPPY. "Nothing that can't wait," she assured him, fussing over what the rumor-mill that was radio said was her little sibling. "Math hasn't changed much in the last hundred years, I doubt putting off my homework for a few hours will harm it."

"Hello, George," Jack said, and knelt to beckon the dog toward himself. "You have a handsome pet."

The dog gave him a distinct Look and sat down far enough away from Jack to indicate her disapproval of the beckoning.

"Tisn't a pet," George said quickly, too wary to Beka's teeth to reply with anything else. "She's Beka."

"My apologies, Beka," Jack said, quickly straightening. "So you're merely looking after her for a few days."

"A-Ano," Hinata said, watching the dog carefully, mostly because of her cat being on the roof as well. "I hope you d-don't mind me asking, but is your dog alright with cats?"

"She usually gets along wit' 'em well," George said, snickering. "But th' cats don' seem t'like her so much when she's a dog."

Yei was being utterly insufferable in her demands to Go And Explore and so Hinata caved like a tissue in the face of her cat's demands and dutifully brought her up to the roof.

So, there was a small pure white cat picking it's way interestedly around the roof while a small girl in a white coat kept an eye on her and on the other people on the roof.

"Good evening," she offered quietly.

"Hullo, darling," Emma replied, casting a wary glance at the curious kitten. Hopefully it wouldn't want affection; Emma had a reputation to maintain, and cooing over a kitten wouldn't help. "Out for an evening constitutional?"

"Out before Yei decided to knock something else over to get my attention," Hinata admitted as Yei sniffed at an interesting rock. "I do not mind, th-though, as it's not quite freezing out yet."

Said the girl from Fire Country.

She took in the notebooks. "And you're s-studying? Airier than the rooms, I suppose."

Jack waved lightly to the girl, noting her apparent shyness. "Hello! It's a nice night to be out."

"Hello," she answered, giving him a small smile. "It's not too cold," Hinata continued, feeling that it'd be rude to stop with just a hello, "th-though I wouldn't call it entirely comfortable unless you're used to it."

Also, Yei was making her fuzzy way over to the area around Jack's feet. She was Exploring.

Hayley was up on the roof, wishing she had a cigarette.

"Wow, is there a party up here?" she said. There was so many folks on the roof.

"It seems like that," Jack said wryly. "Good evening."

"Good evening!" Hayley said, with a little too much enthusiasm. "If I'd known, I would've brought up some of my leftover cookies. I have so many, I couldn't possibly eat them all."

"I th-think it just happened this way," Hinata called softly. "Hello, Hayley."

"Hinata, hi!" Hayley said. "I haven't seen you since the trip. How've you been?"

She was eager to hear, actually. She'd found Hinata so fascinating during the time they'd shared.

"It's always a party if you want there to be one," Emma declared loftily as she took a drag off her cigarette. "Otherwise life is boring."

Hayley eyed Emma's cigarette a little longingly. "Oh, well, life is only boring if you let it. Everything can be funny if you look at it the right way."

A rather different philosophy, but it was the one Hayley prescribed to.
