Frankly speaking, a Mat Cauthon with too much time on his hands was a kind of terrifying thing.

Witness example number one: Mat, in a common room, juggling an apple, two spoons, and a carving knife.

At least he wasn't blindfolded?

"I was bored," Mat replied.

Mirax raised her eyebrows, amused. "This is what you do when you're bored? Well, that also explains how you figured out you could do it..."

"I started with balls, but there weren't any in the cabinets," he said, "so I improvised a bit."

"And moved onto knives." Shh, she was a little impressed.

Mat grinned. "Well, I always have knives handy."

"Except here, where it's wrong to have them in the dorms."

"And contraband is even more wrong," Mirax agreed. "Why do you have knives handy?"

"Because back home people have this bloody irritating habit of trying to poke holes into me," Mat replied.

Her lips twisted as she considered this. "I think you look better without them," she said. "Best to keep the knives around."

"That's what I tell them," Mat said, "but they never ever listen. It's bloody tragic."
