Hannibal knew that, technically, he should be spending his free time practicing so he wouldn't make a huge fool of himself when he finally fulfilled his requirements for losing his bet with Kate. Instead, he was sprawling in the common room, lights off, with a loud, action packed movie on the television. He'd ordered himself a pizza and decided that pretending that he didn't have humiliation in his future was a much better plan.

"I think I would become ill if there were that much melodrama around me," Raven said. "I do not know if my shields would be strong enough to keep emotions of that constant intensity out."

It took every ounce of willpower Jonothon had to refrain from suggesting she make a tinfoil hat to assist with blocking out those emotions.

Every. Ounce.

//It'd certainly be a bit of a challenge to tolerate havin' about,// he agreed, instead. //Even for those of us who aren't empaths.//

Or those who had the potential, but were in extreme denial and didn't want to learn how.

That was probably a good thing, since Raven would have quite seriously asked him how that might help. So instead, she just shook her head at the absurdity of some tv shows and movies, and then asked, "Did you remain here for the holiday, or did you go home at all?"

//I... stayed behind,// Jono replied, shrugging his shoulders a little. //I don't exactly have much in th'way of a home t'go back to, luv. And anyhow, it's an American holiday. I don't really celebrate it anyhow.//

It might have been a different story entirely, if he had a mouth. Then perhaps he could have been won over by the turkey.

"It was a first for me," Raven said. "It is not a holiday for Azarath, either."

//No, I can't imagine it would be,// Jono mused. //Did yer enjoy it, at least?//

He didn't. He'd been sulking in true Jonothon fashion.

"I did envy those who were able to go home," Raven said. "And it has been much quieter than normal here. That is why I came downstairs to investigate when I heard the TV." She deliberately didn't mention the food because she didn't want to be rude at all.

Jono appreciated that, actually.

//I'm normally alright with th'quiet,// he noted, idly. //I claimed th'basement as a living space in my last school, for that reason. But it's been odd these past few days, not havin' to share my room with Jak. I decided to get out for th'same reason.//

Well, that, and he was starting to get sore, just sitting on his bed and moping for days on end.

"I enjoy the quiet as well," Raven said. "But I have become so accustomed to so many background emotions brushing against my shields that it seems strange to have them almost untouched. I suppose it will be the same at Christmas. Even more people will go home then, I suspect."

//Possibly,// Jono mused, //though Thanksgiving seems to be a more secular sort of holiday. Any American bloke can celebrate Thanksgiving.//

A beat.

//I think.//

Not being American himself, he really wasn't certain who or what celebrated which holiday how, around here.

"Christmas seems to have many cultural variations, though it is not universal," Raven agreed. "It is not a holiday in Azarath, of course, but I do intend to buy gifts for my friends to celebrate."

//I probably ought to do the same,// Jono sighed.

It wasn't that he didn't like Christmas, really. It was that if he started giving out gifts, then people would think that he was actually a friendly sort of guy, and then he would have to work even harder to scare nosy new students away at the beginning of the next semester.

... Jono would grow out of that stage someday. Honest.

"You cannot do that," Raven teased, totally picking up on that. "People might begin to suspect you are not so unfriendly after all."

//If they were to think somethin' like that, luv, I'd be absolutely doomed to a life of bein' social and possibly even not in a horrible mood all of th'time.// He offered her the faintest hint of a smirk, even if it was more emotional than it might ever be physical. //What a terrible state of affairs that would be.//

"Of all the things the island has faced," Raven said, "I think that may be one it never recovers from."
