The Roof [Saturday night]

Jaime had a huge bowl of fresh popcorn dripping with butter and drenched in s salt. He was sitting near the edge of the roof, just looking out. "Man," he shook his head, looking over at his companion, "this may be the weirdest thing that's happened since I got here. And that's saying something."

He snorted. "Does this sort of thing happen often?"

"And do you think we have enough popcorn for any other unaffected people who might show up?"

"Uh-huh," Deirdre sniffled. "We think so, anyhow. She was born when our mother had amnesia and was married to my father's brother, and w-we always wondered if she was switched at birth."

Never mind she'd said it was a twin 30 seconds before. Continuity was not this soap opera's strong suit.

Jaime was just about to open his mouth to point out that very thing when he realized... Yeah. "That's terrible," he said instead. "But I guess that even with her uncertain pedigree you loved her like a sister, so that's all that mattered."

She smiled sadly. "I guess it is."

"So, I don't think I've actually met you before, you all squared away for a place to sleep and stuff?" He wasn't about to offer his room, Didi might object, but the girl didn't really seem capable of handling sleeping arrangements on her own, and he couldn't just leave her on the roof.

Deirdre nodded solemnly. "I'll go back to the estate."

"The estate," Jaime repeated. He hadn't realized there was an estate. "That's cool."
