Yuletide Party! - By the Dorms, Monday Dusk Till Dawn

Between the dorms and preserve, a moderately sized--if only because dragging over more wood than was already stockpiled nearby was far too much work--fire was lit as the sun set and the longest night of the year began. In the main lobby and by the fire there were much larger supplies of spiced cider and ale.

...look, people in ye olde times really liked to get drunk and light things on fire. It was a time honored tradition.

Tara grimaced toward the flames briefly. "I, uh ... not really, but thank you."

"You are!" Merlin insisted. "It's a good thing to be all... word-y."

"It's the stuttering," Tara explained. "Usually at home people ... don't really wait long enough to listen to me."

Which was utterly depressing, so, new topic. "So how have you been?"

"You should turn them into toads." Merlin was filled with helpful advice today. "But I'm good! I have an owl and his name is Owain!"

"I don't -" Tara started to say, but was quickly distracted. "You got an owl? Like, a familiar?"

She was very impressed.

"He was one of Francine's toys, but we needed to see if he'd stay real so I can give Arthur a swan and now I have an owl!"

...it made sense. Really.

Yeah, Tara was just staring.

"How much ale did you drink?" she asked, trying to sniff Merlin's breath. She knew he could turn people into animals, but animating a doll was just weird.

"Only a few glasses!" Merlin frowned at his cup. "People don't eat swan here, but it's what Arthur wants for his holiday. So I need to make him one."

"Can't you serve him goose and tell him it's swan?" Tara wondered.

Swans were pretty, okay?

"Sorry," Tara said, though she still kind of figured it was just a big bird and why kill the pretty one? "So -- you turned a toy into an owl? And it's staying?"

"To test if they stayed alive. And he did." A beat. "Arthur wants to hunt him."

The centuries between their homes were very, very long just then. Or Tara might have just been a girl.
