3rd Floor Common Room [Sunday Afternoon]

Bobby's ability to somehow procure massive amounts of food had not deserted him, as evidenced by the fact that currently in the common room there was one (1) Bobby Drake, a stack of the last three (3) issues of Rebel Justice Unleashed and one dozen (12) pizzas of various varieties.

The common room was open and Bobby was perfectly willing to share... the pizzas, that is. Persuading him to share comic books might be a more difficult task.

[ooc: bored. avoiding doing anything resembling something productive, at least until I have to go back to school tomorrow.]

"See, I knew I should've brought my iPod."

Claudia didn't have an iPod. She was in the process of putting together an mp3 player using bits of an old stereo.

Zayne had been here long enough that he probably should have heard about iPods by now. But he didn't watch that much television or listen to a lot of music music and, well, that meant that somethings might slip through the cracks.

"Is that something that plays music?" he asked.

"Yep. And thinks its better than anything else that does the same damn thing."

"Oh, I've met a couple droids like that before," Zayne said, misunderstanding slightly. "As long as they do their work and don't talk too much, it's easy enough to deal with them."

"Okay, and we've gone from fantasy to science fiction. At least they're similar genres."

That's right, this was a new person. "Well, it's not really science fiction," Zayne said. "More like 'science recent history.' Well, recent history for me. I'm Zayne, by the way."

"Claudia. You from, like, Japan or something? I heard they had some slightly-more-than-rudimentary AI tech in the works."

"No, I'm one of the kids from another galaxy," Zayne explained. "And there's time travel involved somehow, too, but I don't really understand that part."

Okay, not just a school for the insane, but a school for kids with very complex personal delusions. "So you're an alien."

"Well, I'm human," Zayne said. "Just one from another galaxy."

"Yeah, but 'not of this Earth'. That's what 'alien' means, right?"

"In my galaxy, all non-human beings are usually called 'aliens' no matter what planet they're from," Zayne said. "But we also call refrigerators 'cooling chambers,' so it might just be a language issue."

Even though they were speaking effectively the same language.

"Well, at least it's descriptive."

"We don't always have the most creative names, but you can usually figure out what the thing is pretty quickly," Zayne said.

"Very true. But then technology loses all its mystique."

"I don't know about that," Zayne said. "I think a lightsaber is still pretty interesting even if the name is literal."

"That's, what, an ultra-concentrated laser cutter?"

"Close. It's a sword where the blade is a big focused laser," Zayne said. "It can cut through pretty much anything, though."

Claudia could picture it fairly easily, but still saw a few holes in the concept. ". . . Lead tip?"

"No, the laser just kind of stops and goes back down," Zayne said. He wasn't really sure he was explaining it well.

"It's light. It doesn't just stop unless something stops it."

"Well, technically I guess it's a kind of plasma energy in a containment field," Zayne said. "I'll be honest, I didn't really understand it when I was making mine, but it works."

". . . Not really understanding the tech you're working with is a good way to get, like, electrocuted."

"Well, most of the electronics just needed to be put in the right spot in the hilt, so that part was pretty foolproof," Zayne explained. "I mostly just had to customize the hilt, position the crystals and lenses, and hope that I got everything into the right place before closing it up."

"... That did take a few tries. But no electrocutions!"

Zayne was actually pretty proud of that.
