After getting into it with Griff last night, Alex had gone straight to the mainland. A few hours, a lot of alcohol and one warm bed later, he was back on the island, eating cereal and watching something mindless on television.

All things considered, his face didn't look too bad. A few bruises, a split lip, and some minor pain could be considered a minor success considering Griff and his stupid powers had sent him head first into his desk. Still, didn't mean he wasn't still pissed off. He was just trying not to show it.

Nope, he was fine. His classes were done, he had cereal, his hangover wasn't that bad, and he knew he'd gotten in a good few punches in on Griff. Just fine.

Jack wandered downstairs to make himself a sandwich, and gave Alex a second look before opening the fridge. He'd seen the squirrel notes about the fight, of course, but it was hard for him to imagine Alex or Griff genuinely trying to hurt the other.

Karev's face wasn't horribly beaten or anything, but he could see enough to surmise that he was at least half wrong about that.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, sounding a shade more concerned about Alex's well-being than he normally was. He shared girlfriends with the guy; in a weird way, that made him almost family.

"Eh." And since it was Jack, Alex could be a little more honest with how he was feeling. He didn't mind the other guy knowing if he was having that bad a day. "The cereal's good, at least. Can't find a damn thing on television. I can't even find a good game show."

It was fun to make fun of the contestants, okay?

"Isn't it time for that one where people have to guess the prices of things?" Jack asked, slightly bemused by Alex's answer. Acknowledge the bad day and move on, yes. "I don't hate that."

"Hey, you're right," Alex said, grabbing for the remote and flipping until he landed on the game show in indication. "I love this one. I suck at it but I still love it."

He didn't know exactly why but it was a lot less grating than the one with the big wheel. "What's up with you, Jack? Gonna be hearing that voice of yours on the radio every week now?"

Karla stopped short when she noticed Jack in the common room. before giving him a stiff nod and continuing to put together her cup of coffee.

Well, if she was going to be like that ...

"Good day, Karla," Jack said. "It's pleasant weather, isn't it? A bit less cold."

Inane small talk, for the win.

"Morning."

Ender occasionally had to make a show of venturing out of his room. This was it.

"Morning to you too," Alex said, glancing over at Ender. "Welcome to the common room. We have cereal today. It's decent."

"And here I was hoping for stale," Ender deadpanned, walking into the kitchen.

Jack was appropriately impressed, yes.

"Morning," he returned. "Are you any good at this game?"

On the TV screen, some housewife was biting her nails to the quick as she tried to decide if a washer-dryer cost more or less than a flat screen TV. Jack had no idea whatsoever.

"I'm good at a lot of games," Ender said, shooting the TV a wry look, "But I'm not sure I see the point of getting a handle on this one."

"Kiss kiss," Karla said, giving Ender a big smile. "Were you driven out of the room by Ben's swollen head again?"

"It was a near thing," Ender said, solemnly, "I thought I'd go preemptive."

Ben poked his head into the common room, hair still damp from the shower after his weekly ass-kicking by his grandfather.

"Is there anything to eat?" he asked with a little smile.

"I found cereal," Alex told him, holding up the bowl. "It's not gourmet but I haven't keeled over yet."

"Sounds like an endorsement to me," Ben replied, rummaging through the cabinets and coming out with a box of his own. "Do you mind if I make coffee?"

"And I made a cheese sandwich," Jack added. "Also neither gourmet nor fatal."

"Depending on the cheese, I suppose it could be both," Ben replied with a grin, "so I admire your culinary prowess."

"I'm surprised you can still walk," Ender said, in lieu of a greeting.

"Shut up," Ben said, laughing. "I'm getting better. It took him five minutes to drop me to the mats this time."

Karla arrived just as Ben finished the coffee. "Oh, you are the best male ever," she sighed, reaching for a mug. "I may just forgive you for Mini-Morton now."

"Shouldn't he be bringing you coffee?" he teased, sipping from his own cup.

"Why are all my classes early this semester?" Karla bitched whined bitched, making a beeline for the coffee. "And why isn't there a smaller version of The Perk between the dorms and the school?"

"Sounds like a personal problem," Alex said, shooting a glance Karla's way. "Operator error or something like that. Your own fault."

"Are we always so charming in the morning?" Karla asked, flouncing by him towards the coffee. "Or did whatever fist-shaped doorknob you fell into ruin your whole day?"
