5th floor common room - Morning

Jacob had woken up to a lot of snow, a powerless dormitory and a growling stomach. The latter two had cause a problem because cornflakes were just cornflakes and Jacob wanted to more. The blizzard hadn't caused much of an obstacle, not when you could change into a werewolf built to brave cold weather. He'd been across the island in a flash and while he'd gotten some strange looks for showing up in just a pair of jeans at J,GOB, the baker hadn't asked any questions. Which was once more evidence of how much the people on the island had gotten used to situations like this and luckily, the bakery had a back up generator. So Jacob had gotten a huge bag full of pastries for 'those poor students'. He suspected that J,GOB hadn't really been expecting a whole lot of customers.

So now, said bag had been upended on the dinner table. The bag itself had been thrown into the bin in Jake's room. It wouldn't do to have anyone take notice of the teeth marks on it. Jacob lay sprawled upon the couch in just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, his hair still a little wet, while he munched on a muffin. In his boredom, he might just end up eating his way through the stack of food.

Best not to let him stay bored.

"Not-freezing definitely comes before fancy manners," Karla agreed. "In fact, there aren't a lot of things that don't."

Karla: worst aristo ever.

"This school is good for interesting people. Funny how close 'interesting' and 'incomprehensible' are, too."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
"My gram used to call fancy manners puttin' on airs. She didn't think there was any need for them. Plain and simple's the best way. Get to the point with none of that fancy talk." Dru felt an unexpected wave of nostalgia for the old woman then, and wondered what she'd think of some of the stories Dru could tell after just two weeks at the school.

"Back home, we have Protocol, but that's less about manners and more about not getting yourself hurt because you acted like an idiot."

Protocol wasn't stupid, fancy manners. Protocol was important.

...Except when Protocol led to her taking naps. Then it was kind of dumb.

Karla smiled at Dru, her thoughts trending in a similar direction. "Just wait till you get to tell her all about this place? Or are you another person who won't be able to tell?"

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I would if I could, but," Dru said with a said smile, "she died four years ago. I can tell my dad. Once he gets settled down enough to get a phone installed. He's traveling at the moment and in his line of work, cell phones just don't last long enough to be worth the money."

"I'm sorry for your loss," Karla said quietly. "I know you said it was years ago, but..." she shrugged a bit. "It can still hurt sometimes."

Just ask Batman!

"Your father's job is hard on cell phones?" Karla called hers in and looked at it, trying to figure out what Dru's dad might do, as if her cellphone case could explain. "Does he...you know, I got nothing."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
It did. Which was why Dru and her father never discussed her mother after she died when Dru was five.

Dru laughed, focusing on the less maudlin part of the conversation. "Dad's a hunter. Except he hunts supernatural stuff like ghosts, zombies and whatever else the Real World sends our way. For some reason the Real World is really hard on anything more then simplest electronics. They'll short out and become useless within a day or two if they're exposed to too much weirdness."

"The Real World?" Karla asked, looking intrigued. "Why do you call it that?"

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not sure," she admitted. "I guess because most people living their normal lives think that everything in it is just a story or a myth. But it is real. And if you're not careful. It'll eat you for dinner."
glacial_queen: (Crooked Grin)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-01-19 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Karla cracked a grin with that one. "You just described where I'm from. Dragons and unicorns and Arcerian cats smarter than you who have no problems dragging you back to their lair for dinner."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Dragons and unicorns? It sounds like you live in some sort of fairytale," Dru said. "Whereas we get the zombies and suckers so it can be a bit like a horror movie."

"Fairy tales have darker sides," Karla said simply. "I've been reading some of them. There's an awful lot of blood and horror that gets expunged away."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Dru rolled her eyes. "Or made into cutesy cartoon movies with relentlessly perky music."
glacial_queen: (Head-tilt Huh)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-01-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Cartoons?" Karla asked, tilting her head to the side. "Emma mentioned those. They're the...moving drawings, yes?"

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Those would be the ones. You've never seen them?" she asked.

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-01-19 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Karla shook her head, the Lilo and Stitch sequel being several days in her future. "There's no electricity or anything back home. And I don't think about watching much teevee when I'm left to my own devices. Just not used to it, I guess."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"See and I watch way too much TV." Usually at night if she was waiting up for her dad. "I should find more productive hobbies."
glacial_queen: (Grin)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-01-19 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Karla grinned. "I never said I had more productive hobbies," she said. "Usually I read trashy novels about dashing rogues, pirates, and highway bandits."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
"I train a lot, so I suppose that's kind of productive," Dru laughed. "But I might want to borrow one of those books."
glacial_queen: (Chin in hand with smile)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-01-19 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I make no promised about the quality," Karla responded promptly. "But they're really fun."

She called in one of them, The Bandit Prince. On the cover was a very handsome male, holding a beautifully gowned and coiffed female at swordpoint--even though she was on horseback.

Just go with it.

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Dru would go with it. Once she got past the whole magically appearing book trick. "How'd you do that?"
glacial_queen: (Fond Amusement)

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2010-01-19 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Huh?" Karla had kind of forgotten the new kids hadn't seen her do this twenty times before. "Oh, right. It's more Craft. I can vanish things--" she glanced at the book and it disappeared "--and then call them back in again." The book was back in her hand less than a heartbeat later. "Makes things easy to carry, at least."
