Sixth Floor, Thursday Evening -- Merlin's Birthday Party

If Arthur had still been back at Camelot, the idea of holding celebrations for a servant's birthday would have seemed preposterous. But he wasn't, and it didn't, and if he were really honest with himself he'd admit he enjoyed it (or at least in as much as it involved picking out presents that made him fret some on the inside and yelling at people about getting decorations in).

The Sixth Floor was decorated rather decadently for a birthday party. There were some CDs of painfully carefully selected songs playing through the system - the ones Arthur had judged least likely to shatter eardrums (and maybe tending towards the classical and medieval).

And there was food. Courtesy of Francine.

Arthur didn't like half-measures much.

"Katchoo! Which of them dragged you out here?" Merlin just had to ask.

"Neither of 'em," Katchoo said, ignoring Clocky's indignant what am I, chopped liver beep. "I made it over myself before anyone could march me down."

Yes. That was Katchoo reaching over to give you a hug, Merlin. Fear. FEAR.

Oh, he would fear it so once he was done being all gleeful that he got a hug from Katchoo. It was like getting the devil to cry.

"Staying one step ahead, eh?"

. . . hey. It was n -- okay, yeah. It was. But, y'know, it was Merlin. She'd risk the cataclysmic event.

"Two and a half. You all have longer legs than me," Katchoo almost teased. "Happy birthday."

"We could get you stilts," Merlin suggested, risking life and limb to do so while still close.

"Hey." It would be a lot more of a risk if she hadn't, uh, gotten laid recently. As it was, Katchoo just tried to elbow him lightly.

Which was... strange. "You're in a very good mood."

"Yup." Katchoo grinned at him -- no teeth, though! "Is it scary?"

"A little bit, yes," Merlin admitted.

"Oh, Merlin, Merlin, Merlin," Katchoo told him. "It's your birthday. I'm not gonna kill you."

Actually she wasn't going to do that one way or the other, but it was fun to have just a little bit of suspense there, okay?

"Life is good right now. If you know what I mean."

"...not really." Oh god, had she murdered Arthur finally?

"Doof," Katchoo said, and gave him a significant look while pointing in Francine's direction.

. . . would this be any clearer with him than it would be if she tried to clue Francine in the same way, because we all knew how well that usually went?

Merlin looked at Francine and then back at Katchoo. Francine. Katchoo.

Give him a moment.

"Really?"

Katchoo didn't actually go eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, but the look on her face was exactly the one you'd expect to see if she had been making that sound.

She couldn't go and squee at just about anyone! She'd been holding that one in.

"So she did the romantic dinner again?"

". . . I wasn't a rabbit any more."

"...that's all it took?"

Katchoo gave him a what-can-you-do look. "Figures, huh?"

Don't say it, Merlin. Don't say it.

"Congratulations!"

Katchoo opened her mouth and looked, for a full 1.782 seconds, like she was going to bitch him out.

Then practically doubled over laughing.

"What?" Oh, Merlin. "Shouldn't I say that?"
