Sixth Floor, Thursday Evening -- Merlin's Birthday Party

If Arthur had still been back at Camelot, the idea of holding celebrations for a servant's birthday would have seemed preposterous. But he wasn't, and it didn't, and if he were really honest with himself he'd admit he enjoyed it (or at least in as much as it involved picking out presents that made him fret some on the inside and yelling at people about getting decorations in).

The Sixth Floor was decorated rather decadently for a birthday party. There were some CDs of painfully carefully selected songs playing through the system - the ones Arthur had judged least likely to shatter eardrums (and maybe tending towards the classical and medieval).

And there was food. Courtesy of Francine.

Arthur didn't like half-measures much.

Tony was too old and too dignified to jump in that ballpit.

At least until he'd had a few drinks.

Tara wandered up to Tony later in the evening. "Hi," she said. "So ... can I ask you kind of a weird question about class Tuesday?"

She knew how Karla felt about the discussion, and Merlin wasn't in the class. She wanted to check with the third reserve head to see if she had sounded completely off her rocker.

"If you have a second and everything, I mean."

"Sure, yeah, shoot," Tony said.

Tara blinked and went for it. "So, in that whole conversation about overuse of powers where Griff and Azula sounded kind of, um, annoyed with me -- did I sound really stupid?"

"No, of course not," Tony said. "Griff seems like a decent enough guy but Azula's..." He paused, then said, "Probably not a great source of ethical advice."

"And Griff just broke up with my roommate, so he's probably ..." She sighed. "I don't know. He might be having a hard time." Even if, from what Fiona said, he was being a total ass about it. "And I think he didn't like my example."

"B-but yeah. I was less worried about Azula, you know?"

"Everyone's got different experiences, too," Tony said. "Plus it's one thing to put limits on yourself and a totally different thing for someone else to tell you what you can and can't do."

"Yeah, and -- I wasn't trying to say 'if you use magic to clean your room you're evil,'" Tara said. "I think it might have sounded that way, but I was talking more about what I'm comfortable with, right?"

"I got it," Tony said. "Some people here haven't ever been without magic. I can't even imagine what that'd be like."

"See, I've been learning since I was, like, six or seven?" Tara shared. "But it's learning. It's not like Karla where you're just born with everything. I'm still not, y'know, anything all that special."

"I only found out I had powers a couple of years ago," Tony admitted. "Just before I came here. And a couple of years before that, I didn't even know supernatural stuff was real."

"Like, not at all?" Tara asked. "It's -- usually pretty underground at home? But when your mom's a witch" and your father spent half his time bitching her out for it, thank you, Tara's issues "you kind of get a head start."

"Wow, that's awesome," Tony said. "She teach you a lot?"

"As much as she could," Tara said lightly. "My dad isn't crazy about magic, so..."

It wasn't really a topic for a birthday party.

"Hello, Tony!" Alcohol did wonders for people's levels of fun, it seemed.

"Happy birthday, Merlin!" Tony said. "Feel more grown-up yet?"

"I think I feel vastly more mature today compared to yesterday. Does it always happen like this?"

"Only in remarkably advanced individuals," Tony said. "Congratulations."

"Thank you," Merlin replied, trying to look serious and proper about all this. Like all gentlemen such as them should.

It wasn't working that well.

"You look more mature already!" Tony teased.

"Any moment now, I'll start growing a beard and lecturing people about some odd creature."

"Just don't turn me into a squirrel," Tony said.

"I only did that once!"

"Was it really an effective teaching technique?" Tony asked.

"Well, Arthur was rather old and... angry at everything. So, not really," Merlin admitted.
