Sixth Floor, Thursday Evening -- Merlin's Birthday Party

If Arthur had still been back at Camelot, the idea of holding celebrations for a servant's birthday would have seemed preposterous. But he wasn't, and it didn't, and if he were really honest with himself he'd admit he enjoyed it (or at least in as much as it involved picking out presents that made him fret some on the inside and yelling at people about getting decorations in).

The Sixth Floor was decorated rather decadently for a birthday party. There were some CDs of painfully carefully selected songs playing through the system - the ones Arthur had judged least likely to shatter eardrums (and maybe tending towards the classical and medieval).

And there was food. Courtesy of Francine.

Arthur didn't like half-measures much.

Dinah chortled. "Just not in the theater, or Geoffrey will wig out. More than he did today. What the heck language was he speaking there?"

"It was Portuguese, but he had some kind of accent I couldn't place," Jack said. "I told Ender -- he wasn't saying anything out of the ordinary. Oh, except that he thought his name was Dante Viana. But other than that, perfectly normal, just .... translated."

"And he didn't seem to pick up on it," Dinah marveled. "That we were speaking different languages. Weirdest spell ever. Well, Senor Viana still got his point across, so that was good. Although I am hoping he's not speaking French or something next week."

"I'd do better with French," Jack mused. "How did you feel like rehearsal went other than the language barrier? We have a good cast again. Sam's an interesting Richard."

"I think it went well," Dinah said, cautiously, mostly thinking of her discussion with Karla about playing Tyrrel. "Although I'm worried about being the murderer of little kids. Eeek." Thinking of Emma, her expression changed, and she cocked her head adding, "Anything else, I dunno. Wait and see. Too soon to tell, really." She grinned. "Daddy."

"Wrong Jack," Jack informed her dryly. "I'm your poor murdered uncle. And, well -- are you planning on killing actual children to help yourself play the part?"

"God no," Dinah blurted, then got blinked. "Oh, you're Clarence? Ha. Okay, sorry, Uncle Clarence." She grinned, then sobered again, shaking her head. "Tyrrel's just so... 'yes my liege' and off he goes to smother kids. This one is going to be work."

Jack could have had an Uncle Clarence vs. Uncle George argument, but at least she was pointed in the right direction. "I hadn't thought about it that way, but it's acting, isn't it?" he said. "It's why we're there."

"True." Dinah cocked her head. "And Geoffrey's always been great about helping me figure it out before. You're not worried about your part?"

Jack shook his head. "He's sort of naive and upright. A bit like Malcolm, and I liked playing Malcolm."

He'd wanted Richard, but the way he figured it, every boy there had wanted Richard. Clarence was fine.

"Are you worried about the rehearsals for any other reason?"

Oh, look. There was the prying.

"Nooo..." Dinah said, puzzled, then her eyebrows did the question-y thing of oh and ohhh and hunh. She bit her lip, already guessing most of the answer to her next question, since Jack was Emma's particular friend. "Why do you ask?" Not totally unwilling to share, just cautious.

Jack gave her a level look and cursed the fact he was a good half-foot shorter than she was. "Because I saw you talking to Emma, and it seemed like you were having a dispute."

Dinah looked thoughtful, and considered, then said, "Dispute is about right. It wasn't a fight, and I'm not even sure it was an argument. We were disagreeing about Roy. Stuff that got said by both of them. It's tabled for now, 'cause it's complicated, and I asked Emma for details, and she didn't want to get into it during rehearsal."

Jack sighed slightly. "I didn't like what she said about him on radio, but -- she's Emma. You could change direction of a hurricane easier than you could change her mind sometimes."

Mostly, he was glad to hear it was tabled.

"I didn't think you did, Jack," Dinah said, smiling a little. "I mean, if you'd tried to argue, she just would've repeated it, it would've gotten messy, and--I mean, so not the venue, you know?" She sighed. "I don't know if Roy heard it or about it yet. He came to talk to me about the fight way before that broadcast. No names. I didn't know it was Emma, I'm not even sure he caught hers."

When they had more time, it was definitely getting revisited, but Dinah didn't see a point in pushing Emma when she was mad. It might not even be about Roy, by the time they talked again, if she thought about it long enough.

"No, you're right. Radio's not the venue, and even in private -- I think the more I said Roy was my sibling and a perfectly decent fellow, the more she'd dig in her heels," Jack agreed calmly. "And neither of us was there when they had the encounter that set this off."

He smiled. "I'm glad we're not letting any of this turn into a larger thing." Which was his way of asking that she not do that.

Dinah looked puzzled, then shook her head, trying to reassure him. "She agreed not to get on Roy's case for a while. So we're good for now. I just want him to have time to get used to things here, you know?" And recover some more from his addiction, before having to deal with more surprise telepaths. "So really, we've got other stuff to talk about, but that's a me-and-Emma, and philosophy thing. Nothing anyone else needs to worry about."

"I worry about everything," Jack admitted. "It's my nature. I'll let you and Emma and philosophy be you and Emma and philosophy. And I'll check in with Roy, though I won't bring this up with him unless he does first."

Dinah gave him a wider smile. "Cool. And yeah, like I said-- no idea if he knows. I didn't want to drop this on him yet either." She shrugged. "Maybe it'll all die away. That would be great. Who needs drama?"

"I don't, but sometimes it jumps up on you when you don't expect it," Jack said dryly.
