Sixth Floor, Thursday Evening -- Merlin's Birthday Party

If Arthur had still been back at Camelot, the idea of holding celebrations for a servant's birthday would have seemed preposterous. But he wasn't, and it didn't, and if he were really honest with himself he'd admit he enjoyed it (or at least in as much as it involved picking out presents that made him fret some on the inside and yelling at people about getting decorations in).

The Sixth Floor was decorated rather decadently for a birthday party. There were some CDs of painfully carefully selected songs playing through the system - the ones Arthur had judged least likely to shatter eardrums (and maybe tending towards the classical and medieval).

And there was food. Courtesy of Francine.

Arthur didn't like half-measures much.

"Good," Karla said approvingly. "I'd hate for our relationship to suddenly become less antagonistic on me. Then what would I do?"

Besides just up the ante with Azula, she meant.

"Does Camelot have traditions for people reaching their majorities?" Karla asked, going to lace her arm through his.

"Mostly just something like this," Merlin admitted. "Though, no ball pits or meat cakes there."

"Ball pits aren't native to Kaeleer, either," Karla admitted with a grin. "Though I will have to go home and see if Mrs. Beale can make a meat cake."

It was food. She was there. Of course it had been tried!

"It tasted really good, but do you know what might have been a really interesting addition? Pine nuts."

They went in everything!

"Oh!" Dear god help them both. "That would be good. Perhaps some black pudding between the layers?"

Karla, you should really ask these questions first.

And then Karla had a brilliant idea. "Do you think Francine will help up make one ourselves? If it's cake, then it's baking!"

Oh, the English.

Merlin's eyes widened. "Oh! Her gift was lessons on cooking. It even said I could invite a friend if you'd like."

Karla's whole face lit up. "How much fun would that be!" she cheered, diplomatically ignoring the explanation of black pudding. "I bet we could make some really delicious food. That would be astral!"

Karla clapped her hands. "We could make a whole meal, maybe! With dessert and everything. Francine's the best cook in the school anyways, so whatever we make will be delicious."

Poor Francine.

Karla still couldn't figure out why no one had replaced them. They were like the universal ingredient. "You should make sure you have a bunch when you go back to Camelot. They probably won't be so easy to get there."

Because Camelot lacked an abundance of pine trees, or something.
