Sixth Floor, Thursday Evening -- Merlin's Birthday Party

If Arthur had still been back at Camelot, the idea of holding celebrations for a servant's birthday would have seemed preposterous. But he wasn't, and it didn't, and if he were really honest with himself he'd admit he enjoyed it (or at least in as much as it involved picking out presents that made him fret some on the inside and yelling at people about getting decorations in).

The Sixth Floor was decorated rather decadently for a birthday party. There were some CDs of painfully carefully selected songs playing through the system - the ones Arthur had judged least likely to shatter eardrums (and maybe tending towards the classical and medieval).

And there was food. Courtesy of Francine.

Arthur didn't like half-measures much.

"Firekeeper! Blind Seer, hey," Dinah said, leaning to scratch the ruff of his neck. "Isn't this great? And did you see the cake?" Blind Seer would probably especially appreciate that.

"Yes!" Firekeeper crowed. "I do like sweet cake, but I cannot complain about this one. And Blind Seer were glad to have some."

Dinah grinned. "I was liking the sushi better, but I know that one's Merlin's fave. And the music's nice, isn't it? Hey, when do you guys have your birthdays?" she wondered, checking Blind Seer too.

"I... am not sure," Firekeeper admitted. "Wolves is not keeping track of such, usually? Doc say he think I were fourteen when I go with them to live among humans. Blind Seer were born three springs before that."

"So you'd be turning, what, seventeen, in the spring? Maybe?" Dinah checked with Blind Seer. "Twenty. Dude." She stroked his muzzle and grinned. "You're a grown-up here already. We should have a party for you guys as well as Arthur. He won't say when his is."

"I mean, Blind Seer were born three springs before we leave the wolves for human lands," Firekeeper clarified. "But he is adult, as wolves measure such things."

"Ohhh," Dinah said, then blinked, then grinned again. "Must be fun, to be a grown-up at four or five or so. Merlin's legally an adult here, now. Of course, he's been a grown-up for a lot longer than that in Camelot."

"Even after all this time, I am not so sure I understand how humans decide one is 'adult'," Firekeeper admitted. "With wolves, it is easy. A puppy cannot defend itself or hunt to fill its belly. An adult can." By her reckoning, just about everyone in Fandom, students included, would be considered 'adult'.

"I think it's partly that by the time you're eighteen, most people have finished school," Dinah said, thoughtfully. "And quit growing. I'm probably not going to get much taller. So mentally, you're supposed to match. Be an adult." She cocked her head. "But yeah, a lot of people here, they're already working, or they've been on their own already."
