Okay, so the whole hearts and flowers and "Spend the day with the one you love!" stuff was starting to make Sam irritated, but his sense of responsibility was too strong to keep him from taking his turn in the lobby to sell flowers and tickets to the dance. He might even try to pretend he's enjoying himself if it seems necessary.

It's okay, Sam probably doesn't want to talk to you either.

So he doesn't have to sit here and read by himself.

Normally Valentine's Day was Jaina's favorite holiday. It was an excuse to spend the day with her boyfriend, what was not to love? This year was different. This year she hadn't heard from him in almost three years his time and was very quietly freaking out about it.

"Isn't this whole thing over with yet?" she frowned.

Sam glanced up from his book and gave her a sympathetic look. "Not until Sunday, unfortunately," he said. "Then there's the day where all the candy is on sale, and then it's all over for another year."

"That's not the answer I wanted to hear," Jaina said immediately. At least she didn't have to think about next year.

"You can ignore it if you want?" Sam said. "There's no rule that says you have to go to the dance. I can't guarantee no one will send you flowers though, so I guess ignoring isn't a given."

"But it's all over," Jaina complained, and yes she thought everyone should fix this for her. Totally rational at all times, this one. "I just want to go upstairs and here it is."

"I'm sorry," Sam said with a frown. "This isn't exactly my favorite time either." He put his book down over the money box, like that might help at all.

She made a face, feeling sympathetic. "And you have to work this?"

"The Student Council runs the dances, I'm on the council so..." Sam trailed off and shrugged. "It's only for a few days, right?"

"You're better than me. I'd still be complaining." Like she was right now? Yeah, like that.

"I have long talks with my dog at the end of the day. He's a good listener and he never complains about it," Sam joked.

Maybe she should take Rose up on that owed puppy thing. Bad idea? Okay, fine. "He can stand-in for the weekend," she decided. "At least it's something."

"I take it you don't have a stand-in?" Sam asked.

"I could get one." No, she couldn't. "It's just one day, right? With a lot of lead-in."

"Just one day, and then you can console yourself with cheap chocolate." Girls all liked chocolate, right? "And people might stop being so grossly happy with each other in public too."

All people should like chocolate, regardless of gender. "Maybe I'll just hide out in my room." Like she'd ever do that. She'd try. It wouldn't work. "Good luck here. Glad you have a dog."

"Good luck to you too," Sam said. "I hope the weekend ends up being better for you than you expect."

Was it too much to expect her phone to snore there? Yes. Yes, it was. Sigh. "You, too," she said, turning to find the stairs.

La la la laaaaa!
