1st Floor Rec Room, Late Monday Morning

This morning, Kate had found out that repression only works well when you're not faced with having to go to a class taught by someone you're trying to repress about.

Which might explain why after breakfast, she'd grabbed some candy from her stash and made her way down to the rec room on the first floor, where she'd parked her ass on a couch and started playing a snowboarding game.

Yeah, she'd be right here until she had to go to Algren's class in 5th period.

"My sympathies to your digestive system," he offered with the hint of a smile. "What's this sport? It looks like skiing but on a board." Someone was a little slow about 'new things' at times. Same with the 'don't talk when someone's concentrating on a game' thing.

Luckily, Kate didn't need to concentrate much. She'd be fine just as long as he didn't expect her to actually look at him while she talked.

And even then she'd probably do okay for a while. "'S snowboarding. It's way cooler than skiing."

"It looks like it takes quite a lot of balance," Edmund remarked. "You're quite good."

"I've had a lot of practice at this, too. A side effect of general laziness," Kate replied, glancing at him and offering him a wry smirk. "I'm Kate, by the way."

"I'm Edmund," he replied. "I think I've heard of you on the radio. Champion of the Third Floor?" He had a long memory for details.

Kate let out a surprised little laugh. "Yeah, that would be me. Not so much with the championing, lately, but I'll get back to it eventually."

"There'll be new students in a few months. I'm sure they'll be eager for someone to reassure them that they're not going mad and that it's a perfectly normal school, if you ignore the parts that make no sense."

As the race ended - first place and a bazillion points - Kate set the controller down to reach for some more candy, and shrugged. "Actually, I've kinda been thinking I might go home for at least part of the summer. Might have to delegate the reassuring to someone else."

"To be honest with you," Edmund said, taking a seat nearby, "home is probably infinitely more fun than rounding up all of the jaw-dropping new students and going through the usual round of conversations. Where are you from?"

"Overland Park, Kansas. Same time we're living here," Kate rattled off the usual stats, leaning back. "You didn't know snowboarding, so I'm gonna guess you're from somewhere a bit further than that."

"Narnia," Edmund replied with a nod. "I won't be offended if you don't know it, I promise. It's in a different world to this one. Before that, England but quite a long time ago. I'm occasionally rusty on newer things." Like TiVo and Schwarzkopf. "Have you done snowboarding before? Off the computer, I mean." It didn't matter which console it was, he'd still always call it a computer. Small steps.

"If you'd be offended because of that, you'd probably have to be offended way too often," she mused with an amused smile. "Yeah, I've tried snowboarding a few times. Fell down a lot. It was still fun, though."

"I'm definitely not easily offended," he assured her. Dealing with foreign dignitaries regularly made sure of that. "Snowboarding looks simple enough with the right amount of balance, but I don't think I'd want to try some of those jumps you were doing on there at that speed. Though I've not been skiing either, so I don't know how well I'd go."

"I really don't think the game is a realistic representation of what you could do, anyway." She glanced at the screen, then back to him. "And as far as winter sports go, skating's more my thing." It had a dance-like quality to it, after all. "Skiing's way too boring for me."

"Flinging yourself down a hill with wooden slats strapped to your feet is too boring for you?" Edmund inquired with amusement in his voice.

"Maybe I have a highly interesting background that makes all that sound just mind-numbingly boring?" Kate offered, smirking.

She didn't, of course. (Well, not interesting like that, anyway.) She'd just done very boring skiing in the past.

"Let me guess." Edmund thought for a moment. "Secret agent ninja with ties to the mafia?" He watched far too much late night television.

Kate snickered. "Also an heiress to the throne of Norway. But I'm not supposed to talk about that."

"I'm afraid I don't know the proper form of address for an heiress to the throne of Norway or I'd start referring to you as such. But that's probably best if you're a secret heiress. I wouldn't want to draw unwanted attention to your title."

"That could easily blow my cover, yeah. Better just stick with Kate." A dramatic pause. "I've already told you too much. I should probably kill you."

"I'd be terribly put out if you did. You have my word that your secret is safe."

"I'm not sure how much difference it would make anyway, though, what with all the royalty we have running around this place."

"They do seem to be everywhere. It's almost as if someone's a king or crown princess of somewhere." In his own head, Edmund thought he was funny.

"It's probably good for them, though," Kate mused, grabbing some more candy. "They're not too special here."
