kappa kappa gremlin meeting | 1st floor rec room | after classes | friday | march 19

"This week," Arthur began, "I have made the colossal mistake of mentioning, in passing, the idea of a joust to my co-leader. I would not normally disparage his choices, but today, I disavow myself from all activities."

That was a nice, capable, strong lead-in, right? "Or at least disavow the usage of the word 'joust'." He did have a sense of humor, after all. Sort of. Hannibal.

"Hey, this is your fault for not mentioning specifics," Hannibal said, glancing over at the inflatable jousting ring. "I'm not from your time so this is as joust worthy as I get."

And Hannibal couldn't see how Arthur wouldn't think this could be fun as hell. It was inflatable! And you got to hit things!

"Anyway, this week we're jousting, as you can see," he said, pointing to the ring. "You get to hit each other without worrying about concussions. It's an awesome idea."

"It's not jousting, it's clobbering each other with inflatable sticks," Arthur said. Pointedly. "It's that this isn't the reserves, or I'd take you aside for a few jousting lessons of your own."

Anyway.

"You, you, you, and you. All of you. Get up there in pairs of two and fight it out. The winner walks off with some chips, or suchlike." He shot Hannibal another look. "I think you and I should give the right example."

"You wanna thrown down with me?" Hannibal asked, smirking. "Fine, I'm always good with leading by example. And I'm not afraid of you."

This time, Arthur didn't have an actual stick to hit him with.

"While you're waiting for your turn, eat the provided snacks and chat it up," he said, already heading to the jousting ring. "And take your turn when it's time."

Arthur should just be looking Hannibal didn't get a sumo wrestling ring instead of this. That would be even worse.

"You're going to come to regret that," Arthur said, cheerfully, and clapped his hands. "Get to it!"

Arthur was still stretching on his way into the ring, yes. What? He was going to clobber the hell out of Hannibal.

Arthur twirled his own mostly to get used to the balance of the ridiculous thing. "Last chance to back out," he said, pleasantly.

"Well, go on then." He sounded fairly cheerful for all that. It wasn't real jousting, but that didn't mean he couldn't severely trounce Hannibal anyway.

Arthur snorted. "I've never backed out of a match," he said, charitably, "And I'm hardly going to start with you."

A final twirl got Arthur to adjust to the weapon's strengths as he steadied himself on the pedestal. He might even be nice and let Hannibal have the first blow...

They were a little unwielding, weren't they?

Still, in comparison to an actual jousting lance, it was nothing; the motions were more akin to a very clumsy sword.

He shifted his weight, blocking on one end, then snapping the other end almost leisurely up at Hannibal's jaw. Just getting a feel for it.

Arthur brought his own up fairly quickly to knock that blow aside (or above, and a little to the right) and then shoved his own forward hard.

It shouldn't be too hard to knock Hannibal off-balance, right?

That was clearly an invitation to strike at his left side. Far be it from Arthur not to press an advantage where he had it.

... Also, it'd been a while since he'd faced someone who was completely human. It was sort of refreshing.

Arthur caught that, but not without a quick wince that showed that some strain set in. The surprise, mainly.

He moved on instinct, slamming his own down at Hannibal's knee.

Mat was giving Arthur an entirely too smug look as he watched the joust proceed.

Chuck wasn't entirely sure about this joust thing.

... Except possibly about the fact he was going to end up faceplanting. He was pretty sure about that inevitability.

Still, he wasn't going to shy away from it. Not without giving it a go.

Arthur was also there, preparing to get in the jousting ring by misposting his linkdrop twice stretching.

Well, he could, but he won't, because he's nice like that.
