Rose hadn't found herself in Common Rooms all that much recently, but tonight she had a stack of magazines, leftover Easter candy, and Paperboys Newsies on the television.

There was nothing bad about that.  The singing and dancing was completely dorky, but she and Lissa had watched the movie so many times as kids that Rose knew every word.

...okay, that was totally dorky.  But she also had the magazines and was flipping through them to get ideas for Prom dresses.  So what if it was at the end of the week.  There was plenty of time.  Plenty.

"On a date?" Rose asked instantly then felt a little badly at the remainder of the comment. "Things better?"

"I don't date." He'd just gone out with someone he went out with a lot. There was a difference. "And yeah, I suppose. Things were kind of shit. They're less shit now."

"Sure you don't," Rose agreed. "And it sounds like win for you. And your date."

Because teasing was the nice thing to do here.

"Did you hear me talk about a date anywhere in there?" Alex wondered, squinting at her. "I really wonder about your hearing sometimes, Rose. You should get that checked out."

"Nah, I just take my cue from you and hear what I wanna hear," she retorted.

"And what did you hear?" he wondered, making a face.

"That last week sucked balls so you went out and spent time with your date and now feel better," Rose replied innocently.

"Yeah, you heard wrong," Alex said, shaking his head. "I don't date and a bender's not a very good place to take anyone. It was just me. Sorry to burst your bubble."

Rose sighed. "All my dreams of deathless romance, blown away in the wind."

Oh, the sarcasm.

"I think you'd do better at romance with your boyfriend," Alex said, deciding he could tease her right back about that.

"I don't have a boyfriend," she shot back instantly. "And romance is for saps."

"And I don't have a girlfriend," he retorted. "See how that works?"

"I never said you had a girlfiend," Rose said, rolling her eyes. "I said you were dating someone. Difference."

It was, possibly, a very girl distinction.

"I'm not dating anyone either," he replied, shaking his head. "I don't care about anyone enough to do that."

She gave him a long look then shrugged a little. "Whatevs." Rose grinned. "Worst subject change ever - you going to Prom to be lame and get up in your school-sponsored fun this week?"

"Probably," Alex said, shrugging one shoulder. "Not like there's anything else for me to do. I'll put on a tie and hope someone gets drunk and streaks naked."

"Now that you said it, it's going to be someone you never, ever wanna see naked," Rose decided. "Like Hurley or the vice principal or someone."

Alex paused and then made a face. "Well, thank you for that, Rose, I'm feeling like my lunch might make a reappearance."
