Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday Morning

It felt like a good day to at least pretend to be social.

This meant that Kate was spending her morning in the common room, having donuts and vanilla pudding for breakfast. Not necessarily the healthiest of choices, but Kate cared not. She'd have like, an apple, later, okay? Jesus.

And of course, she had a big mug of coffee as she hogged a couch, leafing through an old issue of Cosmopolitan.

It was a good morning. Roommate and neighbour randomness aside, she'd actually had a good week or so.

... She'd start getting twitchy about it if things continued like this for too long. But not yet. Now it was just all good.

"It's too early to be getting too witty," she told him before taking a sip of coffee. "So I'm not going to argue with that. You were looking for me?"

"Yes," he said, wandering into the common room. "I've got something of yours. I thought you might like it back before your dance later this week."

"My necklace?" she asked, setting her mug down on the coffee table, next to two pudding cups and a donut on a plate. Mmm, breakfast. "Nothing to do with the dance, but I'd like that back, yeah."

"That's the only thing of yours I have, isn't it?" he asked, plucking it out of his pocket and holding it out to her. "It might not have anything to do with the dance but I still thought you might like it back beforehand. To wear with whatever dress you choose."

"I don't always wear this," she pointed out as she reached for it. "Although I think it might actually go with my dress this time. I got one from Baltimore last night."

[therewaslife]

"You wear it a lot," he clarified, letting her take it and sticking his hands in his pockets. "And if it goes with your dress, I made a good decision in deciding to return it today. Hopefully they complement each other well."

[vanillajello]

"It should," she said, opening the lock before sliding the chain around her neck and snapping it shut again. Did she feel safer now? Maybe. The tiniest bit. "Might not. We'll see. Thanks."

"Of course," he said and nodded. "Anyway, that was the reason I was looking for you. Mission accomplished on my part."

"And I don't have a mission," she replied, reaching for her coffee again. Once she had it, she looked up at him again, smirking a bit. "So. Would you like to be my date to the dance?"

[therewaslife]

"Yes," he said after a moment's pause. "Of course I would. I'll warn you, I've never been to this sort of dance before. I only know the basics of what I'm supposed to do."

The smirk turned into something closer to a grin. "Well, last prom I went to, I sat in shadowy corners making fun of everyone," Kate shared. "So I know what I'm supposed to do, I just haven't always done it. I did better at the homecoming dance here, though."

[therewaslife]

"Right," he said and laughed a bit. "So, all I know is that I'm supposed to dress rather formally and perhaps spend my time getting you drinks or the like."

The internet was a very helpful place. Or not. It wasn't like Bod knew exactly what to look up.

"Don't forget the dancing," she snickered. "It is a dance, after all. Oh, and avoiding the punch might be a good idea, later in the evening."

She almost winced at the mere memory of the day after homecoming.

"I...don't know how to dance," he said and winced. "I've never really learned. I think they skipped that part of my tutoring."

"Somehow that doesn't surprise me," she remarked. "But it's cool, we can just do one of those, swaying in place and kind of shuffling kind of slow dances."

[therewaslife]

"I didn't really take you for a dancer," he admitted, smiling a bit. "That's not meant as offense, it's just not something I pictured you doing."

[vanillajello]

"I'm... not, really. Not this kind of dancing," she said, peering into her mug, then looking up again. "I prefer the ballet and other stuff like that. But, it's fun sometimes."

"I'm pretty sure I can handle some swaying and shuffling," he said and then paused. "I'm going to have to work quickly on formal wear there. I don't have any."

"Well, I'm sure there are many rental places on the mainland," she suggested, after finishing her coffee. "Shouldn't be too hard."

"I'd already planned a trip over there for some other things so adding a stop shouldn't be too difficult," he agreed, nodding. "I promise I won't look a fool."

She set the empty mug on the table again, and snagged one of the pudding cups and a spoon.

"I would really appreciate that."

[therewaslife]

"I thought you would," he said, nodding knowingly. "Anyway. I've several errands I need to do besides finding some formal wear so I should get going. I'll see you later, I'm sure."

"And I have my breakfast and my out-of-date fashion tips to attend to," she replied, smirking again. "See you later."

Bod nodded, giving her one last wave before he slipped out of the common room and went onto his original destination.
