The plastic-covered snacks were once again under umbrellas today as the Magic Reserves met outside. Next to the table was a very large tub, covered with a bright blue plastic tarp from T&C's.

"Kiss kiss!" Karla greeted everyone as they assembled around the table. "Today, we're going back to different ways magic can be used to dodge or shield against attacks. Hopefully most of us will never need to know ways to avoid missiles flying at our heads and other various body parts, but as long as the island keeps getting attacked, we need to devote time and energy to keeping our skills sharp." She grinned. "Though no one said we can't have fun doing it."

"And what better time to break out a bit of fun than now?" Merlin asked, ~~blinding people with his Irish-ness~~ smiling far too much for someone only wearing a pair of swim-trunks. "Tony? Would you do the honors of starting us off?"

"Absolutely," Tony said. He flipped the tarp off the tub and called a balloon to his hand. Which he promptly threw at Merlin.

"Hey!" Merlin, so very kindly, responded the same way. Though his balloon was aimed at Karla.

Karla squealed. "I thought we'd agreed to gang up on Tony!" she protested, snagging the balloon with Craft and tossing it back at Merlin. Another flew out of the tub and raced towards Tony. "Have at!" she called to the rest of them. "Try to keep as many balloons as possible from hitting you!"

"You do not owe me an apology," Raven said gently, after taking a quick look around to make certain no one who didn't already know what she was might be eavesdropping. "I understand that...what I am upsets people."

"Yeah, well." Kennedy shrugged one shoulder. "What I am does that to people too. Different situation, granted, but same principle. So it was kind of shitty of me to wig out on you for it."

"What you are?" Raven repeated, puzzled for a moment. "Oh -- yes, though in your case it is because people are ignorant and full of hate. In mine, they are more justified." Well, not necessarily, but her own guilt made her feel that way.

"Yeah, in your case they kinda are." Not helping much there, Kennedy-- though she hadn't entirely been talking about sexuality. "I'm working on it, okay? Still gotta--" She gestured with both hands around her head. "Work it out a little."

"I understand," Raven said again. Didn't mean it still didn't hurt, though, and this was precisely why she shared what she was with so few. "Please tell me if there is anything I can do to help you...." She stopped herself and shook her head. "No, perhaps it is better if you do not trust me."

"I won't," Kennedy replied, "if you give me a reason not to. And unless that happens? You totally deserve a fair shot."

This was still weird, but damn it, she was trying.

And Raven did truly appreciate that.

"I do not ever intend to do anything that would cause you to fear me, or to bring harm to you or Tara or anyone else here," she said. "I would rather die before I did such a thing. I know that is easy to say, but it is truly how I feel."

This seemed like one of those moments that called for the kind of heartfelt and sweet speech that Kennedy was so not the girl to give.

"Cool," she said instead, nodding. "I'm more a fan of picking up friends that make my dad grumble about my taste in people than getting rid of them anyway."

Raven managed a tiny smile. "All of my friends would displease my father," she said. "And he would definitely not appreciate one with your courage and strength."

Oh, Kennedy, don't say it. Don't say it.

"Not really in the business of being appreciated by guys like your father anyway," she replied, her smile more genuine now even if it was still a little guarded. Like she could turn down a compliment. "If he's being a pain, that's more my business."

"I hope I never have need to seek our your assistance against him," Raven said more seriously. "If all goes well he will never trouble this universe."

"And let's hope," Kennedy agreed, "but the offer's there if you need it. Okay?"

"Yes," Raven said, nodding. "And thank you. That means a great deal to me."

"Don't mention it." It was a request as much as it was an awkward 'you're welcome,' because, well, awkward. "It's what I do, right?"
