Magic Reserves, The Preserve, Wednesday Afternoon

The plastic-covered snacks were once again under umbrellas today as the Magic Reserves met outside. Next to the table was a very large tub, covered with a bright blue plastic tarp from T&C's.

"Kiss kiss!" Karla greeted everyone as they assembled around the table. "Today, we're going back to different ways magic can be used to dodge or shield against attacks. Hopefully most of us will never need to know ways to avoid missiles flying at our heads and other various body parts, but as long as the island keeps getting attacked, we need to devote time and energy to keeping our skills sharp." She grinned. "Though no one said we can't have fun doing it."

"And what better time to break out a bit of fun than now?" Merlin asked, blinding people with his Irish-ness smiling far too much for someone only wearing a pair of swim-trunks. "Tony? Would you do the honors of starting us off?"

"Absolutely," Tony said. He flipped the tarp off the tub and called a balloon to his hand. Which he promptly threw at Merlin.

"Hey!" Merlin, so very kindly, responded the same way. Though his balloon was aimed at Karla.

Karla squealed. "I thought we'd agreed to gang up on Tony!" she protested, snagging the balloon with Craft and tossing it back at Merlin. Another flew out of the tub and raced towards Tony. "Have at!" she called to the rest of them. "Try to keep as many balloons as possible from hitting you!"

[OOC on its way! up!]

Dinah was half-tempted, half-intimidated to do that; she didn't know Jono well enough to be sure how he'd really react if she aimed for the leather. And his chest and face would be off-limits from sheer good sense. She had no idea what would happen if she got those bandages and his shirt wet.

Sooooo, bouncing green-blue-and-red-balloons around knee-level, three all in a line (she could do that if they were all going in the same direction, without having to give herself a headache splitting her concentration) Dinah teased, "How fast are you again?"

If she were to get the bandages wet? What would happen would most likely just be a good deal of steam. And a cranky look from a guy with no lower jaw.

//As fast as I should be, and not a bit faster,// he replied. And then, for a change of pace, he lifted his leg and kicked at the nearest balloon with one pointed boot.

Wet feet, he could handle.

"Ha!" Dinah chortled as the balloon *popped* and lifted the other two to swirl together in their own little mini-tornado in front of him, tongue between her teeth as she kept them going.

The balloon tornado was actually kind of enthralling to watch, Jono had to admit.

//But could yer keep them spinning that way after I pop them?//

Blue-and-green and green-and-blue and green/blue/blue/green and Dinah bit her lip, trying to make it go faster, and said, "I doubt it, but now I want to try. Give it your best shot---"

Well, all that water-bending exercise Azula had her doing meant she could at least *attempt* it....

//Yer don't want my best shot, gel. Trust me on this.//

His best shot was just a little bit overkill. But the shot that he did make, which was little more than a crackle and a thin curl of flame, was more than enough to pop a couple of water balloons.

Dinah had to grin again as the balloons disintegrated -- that did not get less cool-- then tried to catch the falling water droplets. Most of the water burst so fast it was already gone, but she managed to suspend about a handful's worth of water in the air, although the effort was making her grit her teeth. Water droplets spread out in a burst, just hanging there; then she set her jaw and made them all sploosh together in a wibbly-wobbly floating fist-sized pocket of water. "Nnnngh." She shook her head, and said, "Too small to make into a whirlpool."

//Still not bad,// he decided. //Yer don't see floating blobs of water every day.//

And yes, against his better judgment, he was going to reach out one finger to prod at it.

A ripple spread around its surface from where Jono touched it, all the little droplets spreading out and then rolling back again, shimmying in the air as his finger sank into it. Dinah grinned even as she bit her lip, trying to keep it together. "It's not real useful like this. But it's fun. If it were bigger, I could make it into a water-whip or a wave, but it wants to fall apart with gravity and not enough surface tension." Yeah, it had about maybe 10 more seconds before it just *fffttt'd* into falling water again.

//Solid objects are easier, then. Makes sense. They tend to hold themselves together.//

Jono was speculating, here. His experience with people who had true telekenesis was somewhat lacking. But water balloons, for as touchy as they were, did tend to keep a shape on their own.

"Yup. I don't know the physics word for it, but more than a few gallons, and water all kind of -- sticks together, if I smack it with enough telekinesis to get it going in one direction. Tiny amounts, and it needs even more to not just--" Dinah grinned as she talked, and then her eyes widened, feeling her grip slip. "--dissolve!"

Jono yanked his hand backward with wide eyes as the blob of water was suddenly decidedly less... blobbish. And then he almost immediately felt like an idiot for it. It was just water.

//Must make for an interesting trick at parties, at least.//

sploosh! and the water fell to the ground as Dinah quit trying to hold it in one place. "Well, I could levitate someone's drink without a cup, I guess." She grinned. "It's more fun to make waves or waterfalls in the pool. Azula was training me in using it in a weapon. I have to fight any criminals on the docks in New Gotham, they might get an ugly surprise."

//And here I just hit people with lamps.//

... No, really. It was less messy than lighting them on fire.

"That's pretty satisfying too," Dinah said cheerfully, then grinned. "Or kicking them with boots?"
