The Garden, Saturday Afternoon

Karla wasn't surprised when she woke up and couldn't find her Mommy or Daddy. They were often gone for hours and hours and hours, doing important Court stuff. What was weird was that she didn't recognize anyone in the castle, and there didn't seem to be any servants around to feed her.

So, rather than stay in the room she'd woken up in (also not her room--had they caught the Winds after she'd fallen asleep?) Karla had decided to go looking for people. Someone had to be taking care of her, right?

Her search had lasted right until she'd gone outside and found the garden. It was a good garden, filled with lots of healthy looking plants and deep, rich soil.

The perfect kind of soil for mud. Specifically, mud pies.

Karla forgot all about trying to find someone. Instead, she was sitting in the center of the garden, spattered with mud, patting the mud into rough pie shapes and decorating them with pretty rocks and leaves.

"I dance with lots of Princes," Karla said, critically. "My Daddy's a Prince an' I dance with him alla time. Don't need a fancy dress for that."

"You're a princess?" Sookie asked, staring. "Sometimes Daddy says I am but I'm not."

Oh, that you knew, Sookie.

"Not a princess," Karla said, pouting a bit. No one here understood. "I'm a Queen, like my Mommy."

A Queen who knew how to share, though. She pushed some sparkly rocks over to Sookie.

"Whoooa. Queens are even more 'portant. They're grownup princesses," Sookie noted admiringly, happily taking the rocks.

"Glacia doesn't have princesses," Karla said, feeling a little confused. It seemed like everyone in this world knew about princesses--which she didn't--and didn't know about mud pies--which she did. "None of the Blood do."

She hoped. Or there were some tutors who were going to get kicked for not telling her stuff everyone else knew about.

"Bon Temps doesn't have princesses or queens or kings or anything," Sookie noted with a sigh. "Just boringness."

"Is that this Province?" Karla asked. "No one's told me the name."

She didn't remember the Province of Bon Temps from her lessons, though. Maybe a District?

"Wait, how can it be a Province without a Queen?" she asked. "Is it ruled by a Warlord Prince? Or a Black Widow?"

Maybe that's why her Mommy was here?

Sookie shook her head. "It's far 'way. In Louisianannananana. We got a mayor, not a queen or nothing."

"What's a mayor?" Karla asked, just assuming Louisianannananana was in another Territory entirely, which was why everything was crazy there.

"Boss of the town! Like a king," Sookie said wisely. "Tells everyone what to do an' stuff."

"We don't have kings," Karla said, jutting out her chin. "Only Queens. S'how it works."

"Girls are best, anyway. Boys are dumb," Sookie said with a wise nod.

"Which is why females rule an' males serve an' protect," Karla said firmly.
