Fifth Floor Common Room [evening]

Sookie had tried to go to bed early, she really had. But a combination of a headache plus excitement over the new students the next day had made it difficult for her to shield, thus making sleep all but impossible.

So instead, she'd taken some ibuprofen and headed out to the common room in her pajamas, and turned on something godawful on MTV about dating and really tan people (hush, bad TV took her mind off...other people's minds) and puttered around in the kitchen until she'd produced some popcorn. (Unburnt, even.)

With that, she settled in front of the television, waiting for either everyone else to go to sleep, or for her head to clear enough that she could shield. Watching people with too much jewelry and too few clothes fight over wholly undesirable partners would probably help, she thought.

"What on Earth," Bobby said dubiously as he wandered in to the common room, "is this?"

"Common room?" Sookie said, like a total smartass. "Couch? Girl? Blonde? Popcorn?" she added, pointing to each thing.

"Smart alec?" Bobby contributed with a smirk, pointing at Sookie.

"To be fair, it was a very broad question," she said, grinning. "I'm not sure what it's called, anyway, but it's really bad and the people are so tan they're orange."

"Are they mutants?" Orange people made sense if they were mutants.

Sookie shook her head. "I think they're just trashy," she confided. "Their powers seem to be swearing loudly and running in heels."

Raven was anxious over the new students arriving as well for similar reasons; all the excitement and nervousness tested her shielding. But she was curious about who might be arriving.

For now she wandered out to the common room. "Hello, Sookie," she said. "What are you watching?"

"Hey, Raven," she said with a wave. "I'm not really sure what this is called, but it's some kind of dating show, and everyone's really trashy. It's way more entertaining than you'd think." She paused, and added, "Popcorn?"

"Thank you," Raven said, taking a handful. She glanced at the TV. "I do not watch much TV," she said. "Just...Rumor Gal." She blushed a little at that admission.

"The one with the rich teenagers in New York?" she recalled, tilting her head. "It's that good?"

"I have found myself drawn to it," Raven admitted. "Some of the characters are very unlikeable, but they are all so full of emotion. They let their passions and fears guide their every action, and I have been studying them to learn more about emotion."

Plus the lead bad boy was totally hot.

"That's an interesting approach," Sookie mused. "Studying people through melodrama, I mean. Do you read romance novels? 'Cause I think you'd be way into them for the same reasons."

"I don't know but it's terrible," Bobby whined. Bobby considered anything without explosions to be terrible, though, so maybe he wasn't the most impartial judge.

"I am fascinated by emotional studies," Raven said, glancing at the screen. "Though I do not understand why they are orange. Is that natural, or a symptom of illness?"

"Apparently it's from excessive tanning," Bobby informed Raven. "Though I totally had the same thought at first."

Raven frowned. "That is very dangerous to the skin," she said. "They should not do that to themselves. It is not attractive anyway."

Kurt wandered into the room, drawn by the smell. "Is that to share?" he asked, looking hungrily at the popcorn. "I was reading a comic book and I think I forgot supper!"

"Whether or not it's to share depends on what comic you were reading," Bobby retorted.

"So my refreshment depends on YOUR taste in literature? I think not!"

"Did your girlfriend make the popcorn?" Bobby pointed out. "I think not!"

Like Sookie would withhold food from anyone ever.

"Somehow, I don't think that puts you in charge," Kurt pointed out.

"It's for sharing!" she said, holding out the bowl. "Must've been a good comic book."

Kurt grinned and grabbed a handful. "It was all right," he replied. "I just didn't have anything better to... what sort of television show is THAT?"

"The worst kind," she assured him. "It's like candy for your brain. Which is what I need right now. I think the girls are fighting over that guy in the headband."

"Should I be more worried that they all want HIM, or that he wants any of THEM?" Kurt asked, fascinated.
