Tim decided to put Claire's lesson to use and make himself some dinner. He found the pot she'd been using, boiled water and added the pasta. And then added some more because he was pretty hungry and it didn't look like it would be a lot of food. And a little more, in case someone else wanted some.

"Pretty good, actually," Peter said. "Though I'm entirely convinced that Walter will be asking me to move in with him by Monday's class. Which wasn't something he liked the idea of."

"The science teacher?" Tim asked. "Is he your dad?"

Peter nodded. "At least it's not completely obvious," he said. "If you had to ask, I mean. He's my father, in the most basic sense of the word."

"He seems pretty smart," Tim said. A little odd, but hey, Tim wasn't judging. "Did you come here 'cause he's teaching here?"

Peter actually laughed. "If my mother had told me he'd be here, I would've rethought our little arrangement. But then, I don't think she had any idea, either."

"What kind of arrangement?" Tim asked.

"She thinks a school like this will 'challenge me'," Peter explained. "To the point where I won't just want to drop out when I turn eighteen."

"What do you want to do, if not school?" Tim asked.

"Anything. Everything," Peter said, smirking. "You know how your parents always tell you that you can do anything, as long as you put your mind to it?"

"Yeah," Tim said. "But I think you have to choose something eventually."

"Why limit yourself to one thing?" Peter said. "I say, the real idea is to do something until you get tired of it, then find something new to do."

"It's one approach," Tim said. "But then you never get really good at anything."

"True," Peter said. "But if you ever find the one thing you don't get tired of, then you know what to stick with."

"True," Tim said. "Plus if variety's your thing, that's probably the way to go."

"Just not a fan of monotony," Peter said, not realizing how dangerous saying that sort of thing in Fandom really was. "So what brought you here, any way?"

"Got in a bunch of trouble back home, so my dad sent me here," Tim said.

Peter chuckled. "I'm sent here to try to reward me, you're sent here as punishment. They must send out some really varied fliers."

"Consider the variety of students," Tim pointed out.

"Good point," Peter admitted. "I'd love to see whoever is in charge of the marketing. Though it's probably that crazy guy in the pajamas."

"I wonder if they intentionally recruit across the space-time continuum or if it's just a side effect of being on a multiverse nexus?" Tim said.

Peter paused for a moment. 'Recruit across the space-time continuum' wasn't a phrase he was used to hearing in a real conversation. "You know, I don't think I'm ready to talk about inter-dimensional recruiting strategies, when you think about it that way."

"It just sounds so ridiculous in my head," Peter said. "I'm still wondering if I'm going to wake up one morning and I've actually just been in a coma the past week."

"Multiple dimensions is the only thing that makes this place make any sense at all," Tim said.

"Well, yes. And popular temporal theory supports the idea. Just as very separate entities with no crossover whatsoever," Peter said.
