Tim decided to put Claire's lesson to use and make himself some dinner. He found the pot she'd been using, boiled water and added the pasta. And then added some more because he was pretty hungry and it didn't look like it would be a lot of food. And a little more, in case someone else wanted some.

"If that's the weirdest thing you've heard of so far, you're just getting started," Bruce said. "Have you seen anyone turn into an animal yet?"

"No," Tim said. "That happens?" He must be new; he could still manage skepticism.

"I saw it happen once. A friend of mine turned into a bird. She was herself again after a week," Bruce noted.

"What kind of bird?" Tim asked. Details were important. "What triggered it?"

"She was a bird of paradise," Bruce said. "Nothing in particular caused it, although I'd guess the timing of the transformation was ironic."

"The island's magic seems to appreciate irony."

"The island has sentient magic?"

"I can't call it sentient yet. But when your potential children show up the morning after prom night, it suggests something," Bruce said.

"... what, like your biological children?"

"Possible biological children from somewhere in the multiverse," Bruce said. "It was surprising."

"I'll bet," Tim said. "That's another one I hadn't heard yet. I'm still not sure if people are throwing in stories they make up."

"Trust me. I'm not the type to make things up like that," Bruce said.

"How should I know?" Tim asked. "I just met you."

"Then don't trust me and be surprised at what happens next spring," Bruce said. "It's up to you whether or not you want to be prepared."

"Oh, I'm not disputing anything out of hand," Tim said. "I just wnat more evidence before I accept these stories as fact."
