Military Reserves Meeting, Tuesday After Classes

Today's meeting of the reserves was not being held in its usual place, no. People had been ~~handwavily~~ notified that the meeting was going to be held in the Danger Shop, and to meet there once the classes for the day were over so that they wouldn't be getting in anyone's way. It was kind of amazing how much stuff could be crammed into one room, wasn't it?

"Heya, guys!" Zack grinned and nodded to people as they filed in. "Today, we're going to be starting on practical runs of stuff that we've been talking about, all along. Unfamiliar and rough terrain, weapons that might be equally unfamiliar, stamina, agility, and that sort of thing."

"Which means," Kennedy contributed, no small amount of cheerful and eager herself, "welcome to the Fandom Gladiators triathlon, you guys. Not everybody's going to be awesome at every single stage of this thing, but that's kinda the point: figuring out what you need to work on, or what you want to get better at. So keep an eye out for that while you're on the course, and we'll be keeping an eye on it too."

"And try not to get killed." Look, Jak... tended to like it better when Torn handled the debriefing. "We've got guns. If you shoot yourselves in the foot, it's not our problem." Well... it technically was, but whatever. "We start training next week. And, uh..." Pause. "Good luck."

"Oh my god, if you did I'd fall on my butt so fast," Tara said, eyes widening. "I'd be another hazard they'd all have to run around."

"So not a hazard. You--" Oh, sure, remind her of that, Tara.

Kennedy cleared her throat. "No. No doing damage to your cute butt." Oh, god, subject change, quick. "I want to run it, but I have to wait until everyone else is done first."

"You could run it as an example?" Tara suggested. "I mean, Zack and Jak are here to watch everybody else try not to" -- she looked amused -- "damage their cute butts."

"I could," Kennedy said thoughtfully, pretending to look very innocent (because that would work). "Kinda supposed to be supervising here, though... you just want to watch me run it, don't you?"

She was mostly teasing.

"Well, yeah," Tara said, teasing back. "I always like watching you be awesome."

"It's fair," Kennedy decided, leaning back against the wall. "I come watch you be awesome all the time, after all."

She kind of wanted to pull Tara along with her, but there was this whole trying to act like a leader thing.

...see how long that was going to last.

Tara leaned beside her, anyhow, but she was trying to keep the cutesiness at a simmer. (Yeah, yeah, we'll see how long that'll last, too.)

"It's my turn to run the meeting this week," she mentioned. "I'm hoping it'll be a little bit of awesome, at least. If I think too much I'll psych myself out."

"Yeah?" Kennedy, even though she was keeping an eye on the course, visibly perked up at that. Not inching over toward Tara at all. Really. Not yet. "Wow, can't miss that, can I? You'll do fine. I know you will."

Yes, Kennedy, let her know you'll be watching her; that'll help.

Nervousness twitched over Tara's face, though she tried to yank it back. "... we can hope?"

It wasn't the most confident she had ever sounded, and she changed the subject rather than dwell on it any longer. "So. Cabins. Why do you think they stuck us in Harpy/"

Kennedy reached over to put a hand on her shoulder, but didn't push the point any further; she had complete confidence in Tara's ability to handle it.

"I know! What are they trying to say?" she complained, more than slightly petulant. "And there's way too many people, and so not enough walls."

"I minded the no walls part way less last year," Tara observed. "It's ... really, really not private."

Last year, Tara had much less she had wanted to be private with.

"I'm trying to find a way to make the name a compliment."

"You didn't warn me about the lack of walls," Kennedy remarked mildly-- as mildly as possible, since it was, in her mind, a bit of a Problem.

One which she was not thinking about now, when she had business to focus on.

Business, and the question at hand. "That we're the kind of girls that guys are intimidated by, maybe? Except I don't know what that says about Jason."

"I didn't think to," Tara said, sounding a little guilty. "Sh-should I have? I didn't tell you about ... I dunno. How big the shower is. Or what kind of dishes there were."

She sighed, though, because she knew no walls was going to be a slightly bigger deal than whether the dishes were blue or white. She just wasn't sure how to talk about this new stage of their relationship yet.

Shrugging it off lightly for the moment, she offered, "Maybe Jason is the kind of guy we're supposed to intimidate."

"Wasn't really anticipating having to ask about that." She waved a hand as if to say it wasn't a big deal. (Although in her mind it kind of was. Not the dishes part.) Were they supposed to talk about it any differently now? That hadn't occurred to Kennedy.

"What, he's like practice?" she suggested. "I could give it a shot."

Were they? Tara had no idea whatsoever. She was zero-experience girl, here.

The drawbacks of cabin life aside, she shot a glance at Kennedy. "That's awful," she scolded before smiling to continue, "But a little bit genius. Should we, like, stick gummy worms in his bed?"

Well, in the context of a steady relationship, Kennedy had no experience with it either, so they might have to just figure this one out as they went along.

"Maybe," she said with a quick wink. "Or for starters, we could just hang out in the living room and give him weird looks if he walks in and see what he does."

Or possibly just make out on the couch, but she wasn't mentioning that one out loud. For the moment.

Yeah, talking about making out would kind of undercut the whole trying to seem a little professional thing they had going on.

"That's kind of mean," Tara said, sounding both dubious and like she thought it was a little bit awesome. "I haven't even really met him yet..."

And it would severely undercut any argument Kennedy made if she ever decided to call certain members of the reserves on their habit of doing that.

"He's in class with me, but I haven't really talked to him," she admitted. "But I mean, he's the only guy in the cabin. That's gotta be at least a little intimidating at least to start, right? Either that or he's in heaven."

Awwww, but Ben and Tahiri were cute! If you liked really short girls.

"Or he grew up with like six sisters and he thinks this is totally ordinary," Tara speculated. "We should actually ask him and stuff."

Yeah, but that really short girl had a mouth on her. Not dirty.

Kennedy turned a (completely feigned) disappointed pout on her. "That takes all the fun out of intimidating him, doesn't it?"

Well, that would be mean, Kennedy.

Tara turned an equally feigned sad look on Kennedy. "Maybe. Guess we'll have to find other ways to have fun."

Sure, rapidly break down her resolve to stay professional, why don't you, Tara.

"We're gonna have to," Kennedy agreed with no small hint of whining in her voice.

"You make it sound like the worst thing ever," Tara observed.

Kennedy just gave her a crooked smile. "Yeah, well..."

Stop being so one-track-minded, Kennedy.

Tara smiled crookedly, recognizing the one track mind. "I'm going to have to sneak you back to the dorms, huh?"

This was not exactly a hardship, from Tara's point of view.
