Harpy Campfire, Friday Evening

Unlike some people, Kennedy wasn't feeling particularly burdened today; actually, the single oversized external-frame backpack that had just materialized on her morning run, while heavy, had made for a satisfyingly challenging workout. The part where getting rid of it wasn't happening... eh, that was mildly inconvenient, but she could deal. She'd just hope it went away in the morning, and do double time in the gym when it did.

In the meantime? If anybody needed her tonight she'd be the one trying to make the most of this whole roughing-it experience, sitting on a log beside the fire with the usual campfire foods, a huge box of takeout from Ching Tai (please, she wasn't roasting her own dinner but if anyone wanted to they could go for it), and her boots propped up on a very lumpy backpack labeled Just Wants to be the Slayer, Dammit.

Just ignore the little toiletries case beside it that read Man, Getting Burned by a Straight Girl Kinda Sucked. Hey, she was ignoring it too.

[[...couldn't resist even though she's done a lot this week. open like a campfire.]]

Rilla--toting a smart little purse emblazoned with OTHER GIRLS ARE PRETTIER THAN ME--sat down with a tiny sigh. "It's hard to move around here today," she commented.

Tim had a partially-eaten bag of marshmallows with him (and a sleek, red, utilitarian backpack labeled LEGACY). He waved at the girl. Had he met-? No, he'd met her as Robin, so she wouldn't know Tim. "Hey," he said. "Do you mind if I use your fire?"

Ariel was on the prowl for some new potential and, while there were no boys at this campfire yet, maybe a gathering of people would draw them in like sharks to a chum bucket. Besides, there was no reason to be rude. She drifted over, waved to girl already at the fire, and plopped down on a log.

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
See? There was a cute boy. Ariel knew it was just a matter of time and she waved at him in greeting as he came to join the campfire, and did her best to look cute, since she really couldn't do much else without being able to say hi.

"Hey," Tim smiled. "I'm Tim. I don't think we've met yet."

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Smiling in thanks for the offer of food, Ariel got back up to check out what was offered and instantly recognized it as the sort of food that she'd had on her date with Puck. She brightened, and looked around for the chopsticks, because maybe this time she could actually use them without poking herself in the eye with one.

Although, really, the poking in the eye was more from when she wasn't paying attention to anything but kissing Puck more than it was from trying to eat with them.

Tim! Well, that was a nice easy name that hopefully she'd be able to remember. She put a hand against her chest to indicate herself before holding that hand up and spelling out her own name, Ariel, in sign language. She knew it was probably unlikely that he knew it, but it was worth a try, right?

Her forehead wrinkled. "O'Hare?" She gave a little shrug. "I'm from 1913," she added as a little TIRED OF BEING THOUGHT OF AS STUPID bag landed next to her. She poked it with her booted foot.

Actually, Tim had studied ASL. He was far from fluent, but he knew the alphabet and a few basic words. It took him a moment to mentally translate. "Hi, Ariel," he said, and signed, Hello.

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
With a brief, apologetic smile at being distracted by food, Ariel's head bobbed in the affirmative as she shifted through to find the least dangerous looking chopsticks. Which...they all kind of looked the same. The compulsion to grab a dinglehopper was a strong one, but she had much nicer ones already back in her room, a whole collection from the occasional restaurant and common room. So just the chopsticks, and then she had to try to figure out what food might be tasty.

When you couldn't really hold a conversation with a person, it was easy to fall into such distractions.

Tim sat down on a log. "I'm Tim, by the way. I think we have a class together."

Wait, what? It actually worked?

Ariel was estatic, and she knew there was a reason she'd come here after all now, to meet a cute boy who knew sign language. He probably knew a lot more than she did, but that was okay. Maybe he could teach her more. In a very private study session...

She met his signed hello with another excited wave. Then she thought for a second on what she might know, and it was mostly alphabet, so she tried to think of a short phrase that would be quick to say.

Like How are u?

See? She abbreviated it to save time. She was going to be an excellent texter once she got to that point.

"I'll be fourteen in a few weeks!" Rilla pouted. "I'm not a kid."

Which was slang. Susan would be horrified to hear her using it.

It wasn't really surprising that all of Rinoa's luggage was nicely coordinated. Somehow, it was a matching set in a very becoming shade of royal blue.

The biggest suitcase was on rollers, and had DADDY ISSUES embossed in white lettering. The other suitcase said Really Not Happy About This Whole 'Sorceress' Deal. And the small toiletries case had Entitlement stamped on it. That one was very chic, and bigger on the outside than the inside.

"What are we supposed to do with these, anyway?" Rinoa asked, wheeling up to a vacant spot at the campfire.

Rinoa! Ariel's attention went to the other girl for a moment, waving her hands, partially in greeting, and partially in oh my gosh, we so need to talk.

Well, not talk, but...You get the point.

But she asked about the luggage and Ariel felt compelled to shrug a little and point to the firepit as indication of what she'd done with most of hers. Not all of them. She really liked some of them an awful lot and they weren't going anywhere.

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ariel hadn't actually seen any of them arrive, so that definitely stopped her to blink for a second, but she shook her head. The comments were definitely earning the other girl a sardonic sort of smirk, a little eyebrow to acknowledge how funny she was, and a hand to her throat, one that went out in a sort of shrug, because, la, useless.

And, no, she didn't want to talk about it. Har har.

"I would have noticed the bruises if you were," Rilla said, laughing lightly.
