6th Floor Common Area, Friday Evening [Puck's birthday party!]

Tonight, the sixth floor common room was the site of a tea party in honor of Puck's 17th birthday.

Kate had been slaving away (although without complaining about it) most of the day in preparation for the party, baking sweet things to eat, selecting the appropriate classical music to be played in the background, and making sure the white tablecloths were immaculate.

And they were. Kate was sure a fine young man such as Puck would approve.

"Kate, what's going on?" Bod asked, shaking his head and sounding a little frustrated by all of this. "I feel like I don't know you right now. You're different. What's happened? What can I do to help?"

"Nothing's happened," Kate insisted, sincerely. "Nothing at all. I'm myself, everything's fine." That slight frown came back, though she tried to keep it away. "You're starting to worry me."

"This is not you," he said, shaking his head but sounding calm about it. "These aren't the clothes you typically wear, this isn't the way you talk or act and this isn't the type of party you'd throw. This isn't you."

Kate blinked a few times, at that. Then she frowned some more, squaring her cardigan-covered shoulders. "Frankly, I find that a little bit insulting," she told him.

"I'm sorry that you feel that way but it's the truth," he said, completely believing that point. He hadn't meant to insult her but she believed something that was completely wrong.

"This isn't you," he repeated, looking her up and down. "I don't know what's happened but this isn't you."

"How could I be anyone but myself?" she asked, trying not to get agitated over this, because that was not particularly ladylike and besides, she still had a party to take care of. "Stop saying that. Please, just stop."

"You're not making sense," he said, shaking his head and carding his fingers through his hair. He didn't want to relent on this but it seemed to be having no effect on her.

"Perhaps I should just let you get back to your party," he suggested, looking down at his feet. "It's getting busy and I'm doing no good here."

Well, he wasn't completely without effect. But it was merely a nagging feeling somewhere on the edges of her mind, trying to tell her he was absolutely right. She wouldn't be able to grasp it before the island deemed it okay, though.

Right now, he was just making her uncomfortable.

"Maybe you're right," Kate said, reaching for a smile again, though there was something chilly in the politeness of it. Some protective mechanisms refused to fade. "I need to make sure no one runs out of tea. That would just be a disaster. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening."

"Thank you," he said, giving her one last look before moving back into the crowd. He stayed for a little while longer but left earlier than almost everyone else.
