Third floor common room, Tuesday afternoon

No classes or work -- and not quite having the energy to go out and attempt to rebuild the trebuchet -- made for a nice lazy afternoon. Claudia was curled up on one side of the common room couch for a little light reading.

Look, when you spent more than half your time studying theoretical physics, Gravity's Rainbow WAS light reading. Maybe not as light as, say, Vonnegut, maybe. And, okay, she'd only made it 20 pages in, so far. She kept getting distracted by the whole thing with the giant blobby slime monster eating London.

Literature was totally screwed up, yo. English teachers never told you that.

Claudia frowned. "Not, like, consciously. But I think almost any reader ends up relating bits of themselves to a main character, whatever the gender."

"True, true. I've just read articles about scary older women who read those vampire novels and pretend they're in love with the pasty white dude," he said and shuddered.

"See, I just don't get the whole 'vampire' thing. How is drinking blood sexy?"

"Not a clue," he agreed with a shake of his head. "From what I've seen, it's always messy and never sexy. And they all need some sun. Badly. I'd be afraid they'd go invisible in a snowstorm."

"They'd probably, like, freeze solid a lot faster in a snow storm, too."

Hannibal shuddered again. "I'm just glad I'm not the only one that thinks the whole vampire thing is creepy as all get out. If I had to have a crush on a monster, I think I'd go...werewolf."

"Who would you go for?" Hannibal had to ask.

Claudia glanced away. "What, around here?"

She had no idea how open Jacob might be about his whole thing these days, so she was hoping to manage some nice vague answer.

"No, monster wise but if you wanna share your crush with me, I'll listen," he teased easily.

"Right, yeah, of course." Claudia tilted her head. "I don't know. I've always identified with Frankenstein, but I'm not sure about romantically."

"Even with the bolts in his neck?" Hannibal asked. "I'd just be thinking of what I could hang on them."

"I was thinking more the original monster from the book, not the freaky movie dude."

"Right, cuz you're a geek," he said and laughed. "I don't know if I've ever heard of how he looked in the book so I'll take your word for it."

"He was still a big person made out of dead people. Just, you now, not necessarily bolted together and green."
