Second Floor Common Room [Friday evening]

Katniss and Rue had, on the floor before them, a truly bizarre assortment of food: several different kinds of fruit, a couple loaves of bread, a box of Twinkies (she had to prove they were real), and as much candy as Katniss had been able to carry.

"Even I haven't been able to try all of these," Katniss admitted, tentatively pulling a Twizzler.

"Hello," Melissa said as well, with much less worry or noticeable anxiety than Scully. "Is it dinner time? Maybe I should make something."

Katniss managed a tiny smile for both of the girls. "My name is Katniss," she volunteered. "This is Rue. She's also visiting. And if you would like to cook, I'm hardly going to stop you." She held up an orange. "We're eating food we don't normally get at home."

Scully sat down, interested, but looking over to watch her sister grin evilly and head into the kitchen. "Where are you from? And are you new, or have I just not met you before?" She smiled at Rue, unwilling to ask too many questions, given her own particular situation.

"We're from a country called Panem?" She was fairly sure that Scully wouldn't know it, but she was still a little hopeful. "And I'm new. Almost three weeks since I arrived."

"I haven't heard of it before, I'm sorry," Scully said, then admitted, "But I'm from eleven years in the past. So if it was formed since then, I wouldn't know about it." So weird</I to explain that. "And welcome to Fandom." She looked over at Rue, and then weakly said, "I hope you're liking it?"

"I am," Katniss said, fairly sure that Rue was, as well. "Um, we're from the very distant future, so don't worry about it."

Scully relaxed a little, smile quirking sideways. "I'm always a little jealous of people from the future, knowing how things come out. Or having better technology." Except for one or two futures she'd heard of, which sounded pretty scary. "I've only been here two months. It's been-- very strange." But she hadn't left yet.

"Our technology is not that impressive," Katniss admitted. "And I don't know much about history, so I can't even tell you how things turn out. And it is strange here." Katniss looked a little hesitant, and asked, "Can I ask you something? About your sister?"

Scully steeled herself, setting her jaw. "I think I know what you're going to ask about... go ahead."

"I just want to make sure it isn't just me," Katniss explained, dropping her voice. "Um. Rue...died. I don't know how she's here, but she is. Is your sister normally...?"

Scully gave such a tiny nod that it might be mistaken for her chin wobbling, but she took a breath and said, "Yes. Three years ago." She cut a glance over to Melissa, eyes full of regret and love. "It is definitely not just you." She looked over at Rue, then back to Katniss. "I'm thrilled to see her again. It just-- isn't easy."

Katniss nodded, digesting that. "I'm sorry," she said, and she was. She was so scared of losing Prim that she'd taken her place in the Games, after all. "Rue was...about a month ago. It's wonderful seeing her again. I just don't understand it."

"I'm afraid to question it," Scully admitted very softly. "I'm afraid that asking too many questions will ruin it." She took a breath. "Although I don't see how. I've been wanting this for years." She looked over at Rue. So young, far too young. "I'm sorry for you, too."

"Rue says they're not staying forever," she added, shrugging. "But she couldn't explain beyond that. It might just be that she's so...young, you know? And thank you."

Rue curled herself into her chair and gave a shy little wave as a reply.

Melissa stuck her head out of the kitchen, and smiled at the girls. "How do you guys feel about spaghetti and marinara sauce? With extra parmesan?"

"Is that food?" Rue asked.

Melissa took this totally in stride, where Scully would have asked more questions. "Pasta is a bread product in thin strands, fun to eat. Marinara is vegetable sauce, mostly tomatoes, with spices. I can give you some of the spaghetti to try when it's ready?" She smiled at Rue. "Unless you're liking the candy better."

"I like food," Rue said helpfully.

"Food we have much of," Melissa said, getting the water boiling and the saucepan out. "There's more in the fridge here, if you want something to drink? Or an apple?"

Yes, Melissa was a vegetarian. Just not too aggressive about it.

"I have an apple," Rue said, holding one up triumphantly. "And an orange, and a peach, and a furry thing!"

Melissa stopped to smile at the girl, happy in the other's delight. "Kiwi. Do you want a knife for that? It's easier to eat once it's been cut open."

"You don't eat the furry part?" Rue asked.

"Not usually," Melissa said, finding a paring knife and a small plate, and bringing them over to Rue. "The inside's delicious, though. I think I saw some strawberries in the fridge too." She headed back over, and smiled. "I did! Here, let me wash them off." She studied Rue as she was washing the fruit, and said, "I'm glad you're getting to visit your friend this weekend."

"She needed someone to get her to smile," Rue said softly, peeling the fruit very easily for a twelve year old.
