Main Campfire - Morning before classes

Weather still too hot. Check. Cabin stinking of leeches. Check. Half naked boy. Check. Half naked boy eating. Check.

Hopefully those thunderstorms wouldn't take much longer to reach the island, but for now it was dry and Jake had taken up position at the main campfire. There was a bag from J,GOB resting on the ground between his feet. He was planning on just eating it all by himself, but if you'd ask nicely enough he might be willing to share.

Might.

"Didi," Rosalind greeted with a cool nod. "Good morning. I trust you've been well?"

"Hey, Rosalind," Didi said, looking a bit amused at the formal diction. "Pretty well, yeah. Got to see my brother last weekend. What about you?"

“My mother,” she said briefly, after a considering pause. Didi wasn’t Jacob and so she got an answer. “Have you heard of similar things happening before? People who are dead...”

While part of her wondered at how—a brother of Death could die—Rosalind was less than inclined to ask that. It would invite questions back.

Didi blinked at the question, then, truthfully, said: "A couple times. One time when Lucifer shut down hell, all the ghosts and demons kinda crowded out ... wherever they could get to. But that wasn't like this. This was peaceful, and that was..."

She chewed a nail. "It wasn't horrible, but I'm glad the situation's not likely to come up again."

She didn't really understand how hell could be shut down, though Rosalind supposed it could not be odder than using the Lifestream to provide energy to machinery.

"It sounds quite--incomprehensible," she allowed. "I would classify it, from the sound of it, as horrifying."

Didi shook her head. "Most humans never knew, and parts of it were sort of sweet." She was thinking of Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine.

"Mostly it was just messy, getting everybody back where they needed to be. But it all worked out, more or less. Most things do."

"Optimism," she said, craning her neck to glance at the sky. "It's not a view that most people stick to for long."

"The world looks nicer if you're optimistic," Didi answered lightly. "And it's not any harder than being pessimistic."

She huffed, but it sounded more amused than irritated.

"I can't argue that," Rosalind said. "Though they both have their downsides."

"Maybe," Didi allowed, and shook her hair out of her eyes as she looked up at the sky. "But I think you're happier -- usually -- if you expect the best, even if you know it won't always happen."

[identity profile] give-areason.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
She was silent for a moment.

"Some people have difficulties drawing the line between being practical and being optimistic. It is all very well to wish to be optimistic, but when the world is falling down around your shoulders... dreaming of a better period or pretending something isn't as bad is more of a handicap than a help."

"If the choices are practical and pessimistic and impractical and optimistic, practical is better," Didi had to admit. "I just don't think those are usually the only choices."

[identity profile] give-areason.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"They're not," she said, glancing at Didi. "Practical and optimistic is best."

Considering when, push came to shove, that was where Rosalind landed, under all the attitude, despite having grown up in the slums with a less than... ideal familial situation...

"See? Then we agree," Didi said.

She just shook her head. Content to leave it at that as there was nothing else to be said in response.
