Main Campfire - Morning before classes

Weather still too hot. Check. Cabin stinking of leeches. Check. Half naked boy. Check. Half naked boy eating. Check.

Hopefully those thunderstorms wouldn't take much longer to reach the island, but for now it was dry and Jake had taken up position at the main campfire. There was a bag from J,GOB resting on the ground between his feet. He was planning on just eating it all by himself, but if you'd ask nicely enough he might be willing to share.

Might.

Warren really didn't have much of a reason to be out and about this early in the day. He didn't have any classes today, and he could very well be sleeping in at this very moment, were it not for the combination of restlessness that things said to him earlier in the week brought, and the fact that he felt claustrophobic as all heck, crammed into a little alcove like that.

"Morning," he greeted, nodding at the boy who was already there before pulling up a seat. "Expecting another hot one, huh?"

At the rate the day was going, muggy and hot as it was, Warren was half tempted to pull his own shirt off as well.

"My philosophy is to always be prepared for hot ones," Jake smirked. That and he'd just slept wolf shaped outside again. He'd just been too lazy to go back to the cabin and brave the stink. "I'm considering a move to the Arctic."

"If you promise to take me with you, I'll even fund the expedition," Warren replied, smiling faintly. "The great outdoors would be so much better if they came with air conditioning."

Warren didn't really get out much, growing up. It probably showed.

Jake snorted. "I don't disagreed right now. You've got money to spare?" he asked, not really used to people offering a funding.

"You have food," Didi observed as she approached the campfire.

It wasn't quite asking nicely, but it did come with puppydog eyes....

"I do," Jacob agreed, holding up the muffin he was eating. "Good food too."

Look, he was going to resist the puppydog eyes for half a second, so he might as well use it to be evil while it lasted.

Didi would play along. "Good food that you're going to share?" she asked hopefully. "Or do you need it all? I wouldn't want to stunt your growth by taking food out of your mouth."

"Yes, and I so need to grow some more," said the boy who'd grown over two feet since he'd arrived. He obviously needed every muffin to get to 7'.

"Didi," Rosalind greeted with a cool nod. "Good morning. I trust you've been well?"

"Hey, Rosalind," Didi said, looking a bit amused at the formal diction. "Pretty well, yeah. Got to see my brother last weekend. What about you?"

“My mother,” she said briefly, after a considering pause. Didi wasn’t Jacob and so she got an answer. “Have you heard of similar things happening before? People who are dead...”

While part of her wondered at how—a brother of Death could die—Rosalind was less than inclined to ask that. It would invite questions back.

"Hey, Didi," Karla said, settling in by the firepit. "I, uhh, saw your sign at T&C the other day. Is that something you're only doing at work?"

No reason. Really.

"I can make an exception," Didi said with a light smile. "As a matter of fact, I guess I wouldn't even need to charge outside work. Apu just gets mad when I give anything away."

She eyed Karla. "Just asking, or do you need to talk?"

Karla shrugged. "Maybe a little bit of both," she said, trying to sound completely casual. "We certainly don't have to talk here, I mean, you're relaxing with friends and it's hardly polite for me to interrupt that, so please don't think I was trying to do that--"

Karla abruptly realized how hard it was to sound casual when you were babbling. "Because I wasn't," she finished, closing her mouth with an almost audible snap.

"Perhaps," Rosalind drawled, with a quirk of her lips. "You'd be best living in the ocean today if you're shirtless already."

That was hello. On some planet.

"I'm planning on it once I finished class," he grinned up at her, accepting that as an hello on Rosalind planet. "You should go buy that swimsuit and come join me."

That was hello back.

"You're like a broken record," she said, glancing around and choosing to remain standing for once. "Did you know that?"

"Sure sure," he nodded. "One of those you can't toss out for sentimental reasons."

"That sounds like a good idea," Karla said, waving a quick hello. "Except, by this time, even the ocean's as warm as bathwater."

Karla really missed her cool, mountain lochs right about now.

She thought the other female looked familiar, but couldn't remember if it was because they'd met already or if they'd just shared classes together. With an apologetic shrug, she said as much. "I'm Karla, and if we have been introduced, I blame the heat for making it impossible to think of much else."

Rosalind's lips twitched.

She was in a full formal suit--and looked cool in it. Of course she felt the heat but looking as if she didn't was part and parcel of who she was.

"Rosalind," she said, with a glance at the girl. "We've not be introduced."

That she could say with certainty. What else...

"Pleasure to meet you."

Add one to the people about to ask to share.

"Kiss kiss--ooh, is that a bag from J,GoB?" Karla asked, as she approached the group. "If it is, are you willing to share?" She wasn't entirely sure whose bag it was, so she was addressing the group at large. "I can even trade..." She paused, trying to think of something she had that she could offer in exchange. "...Tea?"

Maybe she'd be lucky and the pastries would be Didi's?

Nope, no luck. The bag was Jake's. All Jake's.

"I dunno, what kind of tea?" Jake wasn't a tea person, but something to drink wasn't too bad.

Damn and blast then.

"Peppermint?" Karla offered. "That's at least a little cooling, and I can just put the kettle on a rock and let it steep in the sunlight." And then she laughed at herself. "Or, I can offer you some of the water that I was going to use to make the tea instead."

Warren smiled a little at Karla, giving her a small nod.

"It's way too hot for tea already," he decided. "And the bag isn't mine. But maybe I could take you out for something sometime soon? I'm a little behind on that delicious lunches forever thing, I think."

Straightforward. Fear.

"It was the first thing I thought of," Karla admitted, sitting down near him and flashing him a quick smile. "In retrospect, cold water would have been a better choice."

And directness was a good thing, considering how remarkably dense Karla could be at times. So while Karla might have blinked at Warren a few times, a little surprised, she knew exactly what he was asking.

And dimpled.

"That would be very nice," she said. "You are quite dreadfully behind. Perhaps I ought to ask for a dinner instead, just to try to catch you up?"
