Main Campfire [evening]

After trying marshmallows the day prior, Katniss was drawn to the main campfire again tonight -- this time, with food of her own in tow.

She had made a stop in town, using a small chunk of the money she'd brought with her to purchase as many different kinds of food as she could. So, while she had several bags of marshmallows and even a box of Twinkies (they were growing on her), Katniss had bought quite a few moddable things that one might not normally see at a campfire.

While roasting marshmallows proved easy, she soon regretted the decision to try to roast a cupcake. As well as the piece of pizza she tried to hold out over the flames on the end of her stick.

Katniss had never really had enough food to experiment with cooking before. She dutifully ate everything she put out into the fire -- even if it was charred -- but she was well aware there was far too much for her to eat alone.

Rilla glanced at Katniss's stick. "Did you try?"

Katniss colored a little. "I just wanted to see what would happen," she admitted. "The Twinkies toast fine!"

"I've never tried toasting cake," Rilla said. "I've toasted bread, though."

"It didn't quite take," Katniss admitted. "It was a little, um, droopy."

Rilla broke a Twinkie in half and gazed at it a little dubiously before trying a piece. "Oh, I can't tell Susan about these," she decided. "If she knew what the Yankees passed off as cake I'd never be allowed to stay here."

Katniss eyed her. If this girl's biggest concern was cake, Katniss was going to be less than impressed. "What's wrong with it?"

"It's so...overly squishy," Rilla said, making a face.

"It's edible and sweet," Katniss said, narrowing her eyes.

"But it's not very good," Rilla replied.

"I think they're wonderful," Katniss decided, mostly to be contrary.

Rilla looked a little aghast. "Have you never had other kinds of cake?"
