Rilla, after coming back from days of not remembering a thing, the horror, decided that an excellent way to make herself--and possibly the rest of the student body, judging by the pile of cookies stacking up nearby--feel better was to bake.

If only Rilla were better at baking.

Fortunately, another wicker basket from home was taking up most of a table and it was packed to the brim with moddable baked goods from Prince Edward Island. And those were guaranteed to be delicious.

Rilla's attempt at shortbread....not so much.

"I'll risk it," Peter said, reaching for a bit of shortbread.

He nibbled, and put on a brave face.

"Well, it's... shortbread."

Rilla knew that expression only too well. Her face fell.

"There's a jar of Susan's strawberry preserves in the basket," she said. "They'd make boots taste delicious. Maybe you can dip them?"

"Good idea," Peter said, smiling genuinely. "Thanks, though. I give it a completely non-sarcastic A for effort." He meant it, too. He also knew he had to specify that.

She beamed at him. "I always feel better when the air smells like good things," she said. "I just wish I was better at achieving the good things."

"Well, they always say practice makes perfect," Peter said. "So I don't begrudge you practicing at all. And with enough strawberry preserves, well... we can live with the missteps."

"Susan is a genius in the kitchen," Rilla enthused, "which is why I am...not."

"Well, you probably make up for it with other great qualities," Peter said. "In fact, I'm sure of it."
