Rilla, after coming back from days of not remembering a thing, the horror, decided that an excellent way to make herself--and possibly the rest of the student body, judging by the pile of cookies stacking up nearby--feel better was to bake.

If only Rilla were better at baking.

Fortunately, another wicker basket from home was taking up most of a table and it was packed to the brim with moddable baked goods from Prince Edward Island. And those were guaranteed to be delicious.

Rilla's attempt at shortbread....not so much.

Rilla wrinkled up her nose. "Karla and I aren't the dearest of friends," she said finally.

"...oh," Raven said, uncertain how to react to that. "That is unfortunate. She is very dear to me."

"Oh, I do hope you're not horribly offended to hear that!" Rilla said. "I try so hard not to be spiteful or vindictive and I pray quite faithfully for her soul."

"Why would you pray for her soul?" Raven said, puzzled. "Karla is a very good person, I assure you."

"She thinks You-Know-Who who lives You-Know-Where is her uncle," Rilla hissed. "She's mad!"

"Saetan?" Raven said, frowning a little. "I have met him; he was very polite to me."

And cue Rilla's horrified look. "HE WAS POLITE?!!!"

"Rilla," Raven said gently, "he is not the same as the Satan those of this world commonly believe in." No, that was her father.

"He has the same name," Rilla sniffed, "so obviously he can't be from a very good family."

"You should not judge someone because of their name or who they might be related do," Raven said, trying not to start to take this personally. Her heritage wasn't exactly a secret anymore, but no one had had a bad reaction to it, so far.

"Nice people don't name their children You-Know-What," Rilla declared.

They name them normal things, like Jem and Shirley and Bertie Shakespeare.

"Karla is not from this world," Raven said. "Her culture is not the same as it is in your world." She hesitated a moment, then decided to test the waters, as it were. "Demons are not the same in her world as they are in this one."

Rilla snorted in a very lady-like way. Really.

"Demons are demons."

Raven flinched. "I am sorry you believe that," she said softly.

"I'm a Presbyterian," Rilla said. "I've read the Bible."

Well, skimmed, anyway.

"Then you must dislike me as well," Raven said. "Even more so than whatever you feel about Karla."

"Why?" Rilla asked cautiously.

"Because I am a demon," Raven said. She braced herself for Rilla's reaction. Or possible hysterics. Or both.

"YOU'RE A WHAT?!"

Oh, very decorous, Rilla.

"Half," Raven said quietly. "My mother was human. My father...was not."

Rilla turned very, very pale. "Are you here to damn me to...you know where?"

"Of course not!" Raven said sharply. "I am a pacifist. I would never willingly cause harm to another."

Rilla totally knew what pacifist meant. Really.

"I didn't know you came from the West."

Fine, Rilla had no idea what pacifist meant.

"I do not," Raven said, confused. "I come from Azarath."

"Is that closer to Toronto, then?"
