There was something decidedly unkingly about sitting on a couch in sweatpants, a t-shirt and socks while eating cereal and watching cartoons. That didn't stop Edmund. He'd been here far too long and was developing bad habits. Relaxing, comfortable, bad habits.

"He painted quite the picture of your mother."

Jo smiled. "Yeah, well to hear her tell it, he started hitting on her the minute she drew a gun on him."

"Is that so much of a surprise?"

"Only to people who haven't met my mother."

"Do you miss seeing her every day?" he asked suddenly.

"More than I thought I would," Jo admitted. "Considering how hard I tried to get away from the roadhouse. Why?"

"No reason," he lied. "Though I wondered if going home was something you're looking forward to."

"A bit. It'll probably last a week before we get on each other's nerves again."

"What's your plan for when that happens?"

"I think I'm going to buy a truck. Start going on road-trips. Not even to hunt." At least until Ellen stopped having conniptions at the idea.

"Where do you want to go?"

[wannabehunter]

"Anywhere that's not Nebraska."

"That's specific," he remarked. "Don't you want to go to Disneyland like the people on television?"

"I hear Disneyland's not much fun if you're going on your own."

"You could take the hunters on a field trip."

Jo chose not to dignify that with a reply. Beyond laughter that was.

"You can't imagine a group like that in the happiest place on Earth?"

"Not unless they were trying to put down the restless spirit of Walt Disney." Always a possibility that.

"Something they'd be surely thrilled about. Isn't there anyone our age in Nebraska?"

"Yeah, but they're all boring. Not a lot of hunters have families. Even less of those stay put in the one place their whole lives."

"Not everyone who's not a hunter is boring," Edmund chided her. "Maybe you'll run into some worthwhile people on your road trip. You travel far enough and you always find someone interesting."

"I know," Jo admitted grudgingly. "But I can't be honest with most of them. All the kids I went to grade school with think my dad was a travelling salesman."

"For every hundred that think you're mad, you may find one who believes you."

"But they're probably the crazy ones."

"Then you'll fit right in," he said, giving her a smile.
