The Deck, Wednesday Morning

It was a nice morning, with the first hint of fall in the still-warm air. Didi carried a mug of tea onto the deck to enjoy it, feeling philosophical. If she counted the time in New York with Sexton, her first anniversary as a human would be Friday. She wondered if she should throw herself a party to mark the milestone -- if she was still around at all. The feeling she wouldn't be kept tugging at her. Mortal life felt like a dress she had almost outgrown, a sentimental favorite she'd need to give up on soon enough.

She tried to shake it off as she sipped her drink. Going or staying -- whichever was going to happen, would happen without her worrying about it. For now, there was slightly spicy tea to drink and a blue sky to watch.

Raven decided to spice things up with a little variety and went out onto the deck that morning instead of the roof. "Good morning, Didi," she said, settling cross-legged on the deck. "How are you today?"

"Would it be weird if I said I wasn't sure?" Didi answered honestly. "I mean, it's nice out here. And my tea is good. But ... I dunno. Something feels a little off. Might just be me."

Raven tilted her head curiously, studying Didi. "Professor Skywalker gets bad feelings sometimes, and it is still August, which is a bad month for the island," she said. She hesitated a moment, frowning a little, then asked, "Because of who you are...could you be sensing that someone here is soon to pass?"

"Hey, you," Jake plopped down in the nearest chair as if he'd been expecting her to be here. "You're looking all philosophical."

"Am I?" Didi asked, the cloud not quite leaving her face as she smiled over at him. "I kind of am, I guess. Things are feeling weird. I'm not sure why."

"There's Drake," Didi answered, chewing a fingernail. "He might be sending me all wonky, maybe. That's a smart idea."

"Weird how?" Jake asked, unconsciously sniffing the air. His wolf senses weren't tingling at least.

"Weird like ... you know the way you feel when you know you've forgotten something you have to do but you can't remember what it is?" Didi asked. "About that level of weird. Probably it's nothing. How are you?"

"Have you tried retracing your steps?" he grinned a little at her and shrugged a shoulder. "Not bad, bit bored."

"Maybe I should," Didi mused.

Though she was almost certain she hadn't forgotten anything.

She laughed to distract herself. "Bored already, huh? We've been out of classes less than a week."

"You know me, if there's nothing to bite in the ass, I get bored," he grinned at her. "Unless there's food. Food is entertaining."

To say there was a giant magnet attacked to Delirium's head that was pulling towards her sister would've been an exaggeration...but not for too much. It had taken her a good part of the morning to actually get to the deck -whether it was because she didn't want to get there right away or because she got lost chasing clouds, only she knew-, and take a sit in silence next to Didi. For someone capable of saying amazing amounts of nonsense and still make a point at times, Delirium remained silent, eyes fixed on her bare feet -she could have sworn she was using shoes earlier...- and the water underneath.

Didi laughed and reached out a hand to tousle his hair. "Sorry I don't have any ice cream to bribe you with. Or a monster to bite. Or an ice cream monster."

"The professor who is a demon," Raven said, nodding. "I do not know him. I did not take any of his classes, but I have heard him on the radio. Or perhaps your weird feeling is because another of your siblings is soon to arrive? The new students will be here soon, will they not?"

"Del," Didi said, physically shifting toward her sister. She could have asked about the missing shoes.

"Do things feel a little weird to you today? More than normal, I mean."

Jacob laughed and squeezed his eyes shut as he tilted his head away from her touch, but by no means far enough to evade a hair tousling.

"Ice cream monster?" he chuckled. "I'd be all over that. Why couldn't they have those invade when it was so frigging hot?"

"I like him," Didi said simply, considering the other thing. "Or it could be that. Destruction would be a good teacher, and Daniel -- Dream -- didn't get to grow up. I wouldn't mind either of them. I didn't get a vibe about Del, but she's ... Del."

Which explained Delirium about as well as she could manage.

"It's usually interesting when there are three of us in one place."

Delirium leaned over Didi delicately, her weight barely making itself feel on her sister's side. Now it was with stubbornness that she looked at her feet. She was also sure she had been wearing socks. One was black with little golden stars and the other...the other...

"It's getting colder", pointed, talking low and wriggling her fingers as if she had just realized.

"I don't know," Didi answered. "Why, think we could put in an order for them at the monster store? Really gentle ice cream monsters, so nobody got hurt?"

"I think it'd be cool," he nodded. "We'd all eat too much, but I think I'm willing to risk it."

"What do you mean by interesting?" Raven asked. She knew about the Endless from her studies in Azarath, but the information contained in the library there was far from vast.

Dinah was buzzing around trying to pack, get ready for the party tonight, and say good-bye to people. So she took a minute to flop down on the deck near Didi on her way out to get supplies for her trip out on Friday.

"Hey! Are you going to the party tonight?"

Didi poked her a bit, comforted by the weight. "It is. Your feet are going to freeze off, you know that?"

Never mind she didn't think that could physically happen.

"Truly, you're a brave fighter," Didi needled with a solemn nod. "Especially if there's ice cream."

"Not in any way that would hurt the island," Didi answered. "But imagine that Death and Desire and Dream are all in one room, and they all have the same love and resentment between them any siblings are going to have, and they've had a couple million years for things to build up." She paused for a moment, letting that mental image sink in.

"We don't have that many family meetings. Last one was when our brother died."
