Third Floor Common Room, Sunday Morning

It had been a long, long fucking week for Kate Gregson. But she'd had a good newbie picnic, and she'd gotten an absolutely adorable new fake sib, and so today she was actually feeling pretty good about things.

Good enough to wander into the common room after waking up (still in the tank top and pyjama bottoms she'd slept in, but at least it wasn't shorts) to make breakfast to share with people. Nothing fancy, just a simple fruit salad. But there was enough for a lot of people.

And the rest of her chocolate coins were in a bowl on the table too. She'd missed a couple newbies yesterday and anyway, if she kept them in her room she'd just eat them all by herself.

At least here she was actually partaking of the fruit salad while lounging on a couch. Mmm, fruit salad and a lazy Sunday morning.

"The name certainly sounds Ozian," Elphaba said, thinking about that for a moment. "But I don't think my father has ever mentioned a Liir in our family, I am sorry."

"Huh. Well, there was a Liir Thropp that used to go here, really tall guy with really seriously green eyes," Kate said, then shrugged. "But he left earlier this summer. He was definitely from Oz too, though."

"He must be the student that Ino told me about," Elphaba said. "Strange that we share a name but I do not know him at all." That would perplex her for quite a bit. Perhaps she'd have to write her father about it.

"I do wish I could have met him. Being the only student from my home is... well, then again, most people from Oz are not so accepting of me."

"Well, timeline issues are pretty common here, so he might still be related to you, but just... either way earlier in your family tree, or way later. But I'm sure he would've liked to meet you too."

No, Kate. Probably not.

"As for people being accepting, this is probably one of the best places you could've found for that."

"I have to agree," Elphaba said. "I honestly don't know how to act, I've never been received like this before."

She sat down, thinking for a moment. "It's a refreshing change, but it feels so strange, as well."

"Yeah, I know how that's like," Kate said, sliding her empty plate onto the nearest table she could reach from her couch. Not that she'd ever felt truly unaccepted anywhere, but at least not everyone knew about her crazy mother.

"I guess the island has to have something going for it, to go with all the weirdness. Might as well be the people."

Elphaba nodded, taking a small bite of the fruit salad. "I only met a few rude boys yesterday," she said. "Though most had the sense to relent when I confronted them. My sibling even said he dated a girl who was green, which I could hardly believe."

Kate paused as she tried to recall who her sibling had to be, when the green girl in question was obviously Jen.

"Oh! Zack's your sibling, right?" she eventually said. "Energetic, bright blue eyes? Yeah, we used to have a girl here who was occasionally green. But it was a... superpower thing, or something."

As an afterthought, she added, "And rude boys are everywhere, you can just ignore them."

"It is far more satisfying to throw their behavior back at them," Elphaba said, after carefully chewing and swallowing. "They often believe there is no problem with their actions, and I always hope that for a few moments they may at least think twice before the next time."

"Well, I guess that works too," Kate allowed, idly rubbing the back of her neck. It wasn't as if she hadn't been trying to teach a random kid a lesson just yesterday.

"I hope they were new kids too, at least. Most people learn not to be rude at strangers over looks, here."

"They were," said Elphaba, as she finished another bite. "One was called Jack, the older brother of a rather young new student named Bobby. The other was called Percy, whom I met waiting for the bus."

She had no trouble singling them out. "Everyone else was so nice about things."

"Wow, Percy was rude," Kate deadpanned. "I'm stunned."

Yeah, Kate might have already run into him too.

"I met him. Called him a kid 'cause he was in a pissy mood and he started arguing with me. I'm sure that attitude won't last."

"I see his manners didn't improve upon arrival," Elphaba said. "I don't know what possesses people to think that simply being polite is below them. It's like they've not a thought in their heads that isn't about themselves."

Kate herself could often be seen as not thinking much about anyone but herself. But at least she had enough sense to not just be randomly rude to people. Especially in a place where some people had superpowers.

So she was just rude to her friends. That worked.

"Well, it's kind of a teenager thing," she remarked. "I think we're all supposed to grow out of it, eventually."

"I think a lot of Munchkins never do," Elphaba said. "They all tend to be rather small-minded about everything. But I suppose that's just another reason to be glad I am here and not there."

Kate quirked a small smirk at the mention of Munchkins and shook her head... And then realized something.

"Ohh... By the way, has anyone mentioned it yet that Oz is kind of an, uh, children's story over here?"

That seemed like something that might be useful for Elphaba to know.

Elphaba gave Kate a puzzled look. "Excuse me, I don't believe I heard you correctly. Could you repeat that?"

"It's a story for children," Kate repeated, looking almost a little apologetic about it. "Kind of a classic, actually. There's this book called The Wizard of Oz? I grew up thinking the whole place was just something someone made up."

"But..."

Of all the things Elphaba had been told, this seemed the most unbelievable. "Is this some sort of twisted joke?" she said, her expression hardening as well as her tone.

Kate hadn't expected a reaction quite like that, and whereas Elphaba's expression hardened, hers seemed to soften. "No, it's real," she said, carefully. "Some guy from here went there, came back, and wrote a book. And an incredible inaccurate portrayal, from what I've heard."

"Oh," Elphaba said, her hard expression turning slightly sheepish. "I misunderstood what you meant. But people treat Oz as just as story?"

"Pretty much," Kate shrugged, glad that this didn't seem to be likely to boil into a major crisis after all. "I mean, the story's all over pop culture, but I doubt anyone outside this island knows it actually exists."

"Which would be why they all keep thinking I am from Australia, even if they have heard the story," Elphaba said. "I do not think I'd want to read a story that was a false telling of Oz."

"Probably for the best," Kate agreed, for several reasons that she wasn't going to divulge. "And like half the people here come from worlds where they don't even know the book version, anyway."

"So it is only a story here on Earth," Elphaba said, grateful that Robin had clarified that little fact with her. "How awful is it, since you have read it?"
