Magic + Support Reserves, The Deck, Wednesday After Classes

It was a new semester! It was a new Magic + Support Reserves meeting! Karla hadn't provided the snacks this time!

It was all very exciting. Exciting in a way that made Tara nervous -- eek, public speaking -- but exciting. Arrivals who had followed the handwavey signs to the meeting were being encouraged to take hard candy from a bowl as they joined the group, but not to eat them.

Raven was on edge as well, but for an entirely different reason. She was unsettled by the idea that Zatanna might show up to join the Reserves, but she wasn't about to let her personal feelings disrupt the group. So whether Zatanna was there or not, Raven was going to smile pleasantly and welcome everyone to the meeting.

"Welcome to the reserves meeting," Tara said with a smile, once she realized everybody was waiting for her to say something. "If you're new, it's good to have you. If you're not new, it's still really good to have you. Anyhow .... we come together to hang out, but also to talk about how to use our skills to help out if things go wrong. A lot of us are witches. We also have some really good healers, some incredibly smart researchers, and s-some people who don't really come with a label. You're all welcome."

"We're playing a game today," she added, gesturing to the candy. "For every piece of candy you took, you have to share one fact about yourself other than your name and where you're from. it could be, um ... favorite movie, favorite food, favorite place you visited, most embarrassing moment ... whatever you feel like saying."

She pointed at random into the group. "You can go first."

Raven was totally serene. Peaceful. Really!

She was also there to talk to anyone who might have questions or suggestions about the Reserves. Complaints went to Karla.

Dolf could have gone to Tara, that was certain. But it was always better to know more people, especially when there weren't so many that they were impossible to know.

Besides, Raven looked nice. A little tense, but nice. "Hi," he added, before he could be accused of being rude.

"I am, yes," Raven said, giving him a smile and trying to relax. "I am Raven, and I act as liaison between the Magical and the Support Reserves, since my gifts fall into each. You are a new student?"

"I am," Dolf said, with a quick nod. "I met Tara," and with that, he pointed her way, lightly. "At the picnic. And I have this--"

Which is about where his carefully rehearsed speech fell short. "Sorry," he said, "Are you... okay?" An empath, he wasn't, but he knew a little strained when he saw it.

"I am all right," Raven hastily assured him, mentally sighing about her lack of control. A year ago she never would have allowed her emotions to be so easily seen, but she was a different person now. "It has merely been a busy week, and many of my friends have left the island recently. But I am eager to meet new people."

"I know how it feels," Dolf replied. It was as sympathetic as he could go with his currently still-lacking vocabulary, but he hoped she'd get, at least, that it covered both the people leaving and the meeting new ones. "I... heard you also lost a leader?"

He wouldn't realise it for another few moments, but he was gripping his phone pretty tightly in his pocket.

Raven nodded. "Francine was the leader of the Support Reserves, yes," she said. "She graduated and left the island last week."

She gave him a look of concern, picking up on his emotions. "You seem discomforted," she said. "Please, be at ease. You are among friends here." Well, except maybe for Zatanna, shh.

"I know. I'm fine," Dolf said, and chewed a little on his lip -- then he made a decision, and pulled the phone out of his pocket. "I got a message," he started anew, stubbornness making him push through the words. His jaw set in the process. "Asking if I could help. I'm sure it wasn't... meant for me, but I want to."

To be useful was something he hadn't known he needed, before.

Tara eyed Raven. She wasn't an empath either, but she recognized a jittery Raven when she saw one.

When they were moddedly, oh my cleaning up after the meeting, she asked, "Are you doing okay? You seem a little, uh ... I dunno. Tense."

She wondered if it might be about Jono and his girlfriend. But she knew she didn't know that whole story.

"I fear I am not reacting well to the presence of one of the new students," Raven said, glancing about almost as if she expected Zatanna to be standing there, pointing and proclaiming her evil. "It has been a difficult past few days, what with so many people I care for leaving or struggling to deal with those who have gone, and to see her here on top of all that...."

"It's probably not her fault she's green," Tara said, jumping to a conclusion that made some sense to her. "It ... doesn't mean anything. necessarily."

"Elphaba?" Raven said, confused. "No, I do not have any problem with her, though I am curious if she knows Liir, since they have the same last name. I meant Zatanna." She shot the dark-haired girl a glance, and for a brief moment her carefully composed serenity gave way to unhappiness.

"I talked to her at the welcome picnic," Tara said, looking confused. "She seemed ..."

And then something occured to her. You could almost see her brain working.

"Oh my god," she finished. "She was one of the ones trying to convince us you were evil. I d-didn't recognize her without the fishnets and now I feel kind of dumb."

"She is indeed the one who told the Justice League I was evil, and then led them to disrupt the ritual to bar my father from this world," Raven said, drawing in a breath to calm herself. She didn't want to get worked up about it again. "Though she seems to be a Zatanna from a different world, for she is younger and claimed not to know me. Please, do not feel foolish that you did not recognize her. You are not as familiar with her as I."

"I still wouldn't have told her to sign up if I'd remembered," Tara said loyally. The blush was fading. "But ... if she's here now, and she gets to know you, this one won't do that in the future, right? 'Cause she'll realize how insane it is."

"You could have warned me," Kennedy teased, popping a Hershey's Kiss into her mouth as she walked up. "That going for the candy was gonna put sharing time in danger of being all about me."

She was perfectly aware that would constitute an unfair advantage, yes.

Kennedy spread her hands (well, one hand and one fist clenched around several pieces of candy) and let her jaw drop, pretending to look shocked. "Who, me? I mean, it's a fun subject, don't get me wrong, but a little off-topic for the day."

"We could do a special all about Kennedy meeting," Tara teased. "Favorite breakfast, training routine, middle name, how cute you are when you're asleep..."

She shrugged a bit. "I'd be interested, anyhow."

"You would," Kennedy said indulgently, but had to disclaim it with: "I am not cute when I'm asleep, though!"

More seriously, she added, "Besides, not really useful for what you guys do. How's the group looking so far? Or is it too soon to tell?"

Tara straightened. "Too soon to tell," she admitted. "We have a new leader, I think, and I'm not sure how that'll go, and it's weird asking what powers people have because we're so all over the map, and ... but we'd pull it together. We always do, right?"

"And," she added, "you are, too, cute when you sleep."

"Yeah, we've got a new one too," Kennedy said slowly, still not sure how she felt about that. Maladicta was all... lurky. She'd totally take the two girls-to-one guy ratio, though. "I so know what you mean. My kids, their strengths are all over the place too, and throw in different worlds and technology all over the scale? I'm actually kind of glad we manage to work together as much as we do."

She pretended to look affronted. For about half a second.

"Okay, maybe. I guess you would know. But I get to say you're adorable when you sleep too, then."

Oh, god. This could get nauseating.

Karla was there and for more than just complaints.

And had no idea why she should be the go-to leader for complaints.
