Reserves: Behind the Dorms, Tuesday After Classes [9/7]

Zack was doing that bouncing thing again. This probably wouldn't come as a surprise to anybody who had been here even just last week, right? Zack bounced. Birds flew. Fandom was weird. Life went on. But today, he was doing that bouncing thing with a small stack of notepads in his arms, and a few pens sticking out of his pockets.

"We're having another discussion meeting today," he informed the group as they gathered for the reserves meeting. "We'll get into the more hands-on stuff as the semester goes on, but we have to cover the basics first, you know? And today, we're covering the really, really basic basics. We're covering supplies."

"Like what would be usefull the next time the island is invaded," Maladicta added from her spot once more in the shade of the building. "Whether you were here for the last attack on the island, or new here, we would like to hear your ideas."

There was a pause before she added, "Cookies don't count, no matter how much Zack may claim otherwise."

"Hey!"

Kennedy rolled her eyes mildly at both of them. "We know, discussion time is a little light on the action, but having everybody on the same page is a good thing, so. Shelving the cookie debate." A beat. "For now, anyway. Everybody's gonna pair off here and come up with a little back-to-school supply list. Sort of-- if by supplies you mean stuff you're going to want to have in case we get invaded again."

He nodded as he read it, impressed. Well, at least she wasn't one of those Slayers who were into explosives and such. That would be tough to practice. And the "handy magic users" thing didn't bother him at all; he had no problem with people playing to their strengths, and magic users would certainly be valuable in the event of an invasion.

"Impressive list," he commented, forgetting that he'd meant to be sneaky about the list-reading. Oh well. It wasn't like he was cheating.

"No, it's quite good," he said, ignoring the slight snub. "I appreciate the lack of explosives."

Wes laughed. "Yes, precisely. Though I've heard they've used that excuse quite a lot."

"Regardless," he said, "I think you've quite a solid grasp on the necessary tools for threatening situations."

And he kind of felt like an idiot after saying that when obviously she had a decent grasp on it, being head of the Reserves and all, but that kind of thing never occured to him when he was actually talking.

If you don't feel comfortable with shooting things, best to avoid it, really," Wesley agreed. "I'm certain there are quite a few students here who can fill that role if the situation demands it. Myself included." And yeah, he puffed up a little bit at that last part. Pompous? Wes? Gasp.

"Right, of course. I meant guns," he said hurriedly. Yikes. He really had a knack for ticking off Slayers/Potentials/any human beings who don't like pompous people. Strange, that.

"Well, thank you," he said, hands going up to tweak his shirt collar.

"I'd be happy to go over the mystical side a bit if you'd still like to train together," he offered.

"Oh, yes, it's quite real, yes," Wes said. "More so in the hands of some than others, of course - I'm familiar with some of the basics, but there are some people who are more naturally inclined toward magic. A girl I was working with on the Hellmouth, for instance. But I'll certainly introduce you to some of the rudiments of magic, though it might not be entirely comprehensive."

"Fair enough," he replied. "Historically speaking, it's been the rare Slayer who's known more magic than was strictly necessary to survive in her society. It's certainly not necessary here, at any rate."

Argh. He had to start watching his words. But it was Wes, so - not likely.

"Understandable," he said. "Well, then, if you'd like, we can stick to weapons training to start off, and then if we do go into mystical things, they can be more observational than practical application-based."

And again he was struck by how weird it was that she actually wanted him to train her. He had to wonder if she knew about the stuff that had led to his getting fired.

Yeah, Wes had a tendency to assume that what happened to him was of vital importance to everyone else.

Well, that was settled, at any rate.

"When would you like to start?"

"Perhaps Saturday?" he suggested. "I have two classes on Friday, and I've agreed to spar with someone Friday evening. So provided I'm still alive on Saturday, that would be the day."

Aw, crap. Look what he started. Fail, Wes.

"Oh, no, you don't want to do that," he protested, doubting he'd get anywhere with this. "It'll likely be very dull and of little interest to you. Or anyone else, really. Best to avoid it at all costs."

That was the worst excuse he'd ever given, probably ever.
