Reserves: Behind the Dorms, Tuesday After Classes [9/14]

Instead of the nearly usual coffee, there was a bend to the whims of the other leaders of the reserve and it was a large selection of mocha lattes. Yes, with a lot of whipped cream. Happy now, Zack?

"Welcome back," Maladicta said, under her umbrella ella ella once again as she addressed the group. "Today we're going to be talking about methods for escaping capture using whatever is available to you at the moment or your own natural abilities."

Like turning into the ever cliche bats!

Zack couldn't turn into bats, but he suspected that he'd totally find a way to escape capture if ever he was in a situation that warranted it. It would probably take him a while, depending on the situation, but sooner or later...

"It's really hard to say just what sort of capture you might face, on an island like this. But the simplest one for us to work with here and now would be the ever classic... Being tied up," Zack intoned, bouncing and smiling and yes, totally happy because his mocha had whipped cream and life was good and he was stupidly high on sugar. "Ropes and handcuffs and all of that!"

Oh, sure, bring up the natural abilities thing. Kennedy at least got to keep the annoyed look off her face by smothering an amused smirk at Zack. "Not like that, guys." Oh, you know someone was thinking it.

...someone other than Kennedy, because that was a given.

"Not like what?" Oh, Zack. You knew better, you silly boy. Stop playing dumb. "Aaaanyhow, today we've got some chairs set out, and some rope, and some handcuffs and stuff to experiment with. Pair off with someone and take turns tying one another to the chair, and trying to get free! Wriggling helps, I've heard! And, uh, if somebody is having trouble getting out, have a heart and let them go if they ask, okay? We're not here to traumatize anyone, just to get some practise in on the chance that we end up in some sticky situation."

Knowing Fandom, it could be literally sticky. But as someone who'd gotten tied to a chair not all that long ago herself, Kennedy spoke up, "And it's cool if you want to, uh, sit this one out today."

Maladicta was giving Zack a very concerned look for that last comment there, but was just going to ignore it for now. Square Enix sure was dirty! "If anyone has tips beside... wriggling... please feel free to share with your compatriots."

Cally was perfectly willing to be tied up - though mentally echoing Zack's 'Not like what?' She did have her doubts as to how her own natural abilities might be helpful in this case, though. She took a seat on one of the chairs, her second mocha still in hand.

What? It was good.

Scully hated being tied up by now, but was also fairly confident in her ability to get the heck out of ropes or handcuffs if she had to.

She hadn't put down her mocha either yet. "Hi. I'm Scully. Are you ready to be tied up now? ... unless you want to finish your mocha first."

Cally grinned. "I'm sure my captors wouldn't be so kind, thank you." There was only a swallow or so left in it, after which she set the cup aside on the grass.

"You're welcome. No reason to be inhumane and caffeine-withholding," Scully said, picking up a length of rope, and thinking sardonically of Kennedy's Not like that. "I'm sure some captors would be reasonable, I just haven't m--heard of any who'd be reasonable about coffee."

"I'm afraid I don't have any natural advantages that would help much with escaping that," Cally said, eying the rope. Well, being skinny, perhaps.

"If I'm tying you to the chair, stiffening all your muscles will help. The ropes will relax when you do," Scully told her, then shook her head. "Just consider me a fifth columnist in your kidnapping group."

Cally laughed, but she could see the value of the idea. "It wouldn't help me to escape on my own," she mused, sitting obediently still, "but I could call for help without alerting my captors, if someone friendly were close enough."

Scully got her legs tied tight, but not too tight, then looped them to wrap around Cally's wrists behind her chair. "You can?" she asked, surprised, being careful with the knots. "If you tip the chair over, you might be able to shimmy or crawl to something to get the ropes off, too."

Presuming there wasn't someone standing over her with a gun. That was when the other thing might come in handy.

If she wasn't next to a volcano and her friends weren't idiots who mistook 'watch out, they're hiding by the rim' for 'come on over to the rim, we have jaffa cakes and jam, BYOB.'

//I can.// Cally sent, while concentrating on trying to keep her muscles taut as the rope wrapped around them.

Scully jolted, and jumped, then relaxed, peering at Cally with curiosity, her final loop fixed, then stepping away from Cally. "That's incredibly useful-- can you hear what anyone else is thinking, as well?"

Cally shook her head. "Only if it's projected to me."

"From someone else with telepathy," Scully inferred. "Still useful. Do you want to try to get free now?" She quirked a smile. "I can hold another mocha in front of you as motivation, if you like."

"Motivation not to sleep at all tonight, perhaps." Cally tested the ropes now: a bit of slack, but not enough for her to wriggle her hands free. If she knocked the chair over, though, she might be able to manage something... "That one was my second."

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Then we can probably consider you sufficiently enhanced to escape under your own power," Scully said, amused. "And yes, knocking it over's an excellent start."

"Tell that to my shoulder. Ouch."

Still, there was more room to twist now, and better leverage for her wrists to pull against.

"If you can get one loop loose, you should be able to get the bonds to loosen some more," Scully offered. "... or so I've heard."

Cally really wasn't in a position to raise an eyebrow at her right now, but she would if she could.

"I can't-- ah, there." It took a slightly-painful compression of her fingers, but she managed to slip her hands free from one of the loops, which gave her more play to slither around a bit, stretching her hands down the back of the chair towards where her feet were tied.

"You've got it," Scully said, encouraging. "Of course, they might not leave you alone this long... you might have to pretend you're still tied up until you can jump someone. Or get a weapon." She cocked her head. "Or use the rope against them."

If she could hook the toe of her boot around -- yes. There. Enough leverage to snake her hands free. "How would I do that?" Cally asked, said rope now loose in her hands.

Scully pointed to the chair. "Set up a trip-wire. Or a clothesline at neck height, if it were dark enough that they'd miss it until it was too late. There's garrotes too, but you'd need a height advantage for that." She never had the height advantage, sadly.

Re: Practice Escaping!

Cally had a bit of that, but what she didn't have was much in the way of French vocabulary. "What is a garrote?"

Re: Practice Escaping!

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
"A garotte is a noose, basically. You'd need to fasten each end to something to give you pull enough to strangle someone with the force of pull, but-- that's one way to do it." Scully paused. "Not that I'm advocating murder, but we're getting away from kidnappers here."

Re: Practice Escaping!

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
"It can be," Scully had to admit. "Hitting them with the chair might work better, especially if you can get some leverage." She added, "I haven't been tied up since I came to the island, so maybe we'll never need to know this."

Ha.
