The Deck [Friday, Evening]

It was that time of year again. One of Effy's favourites, in fact. Who didn't love a cultural excuse to sit in the dark, set shit alight and just sit and watch it burn? Not having fireworks wasn't too big a deal, really. Could still come out and play with flames. That was better than nothing.

So far, she'd not had much trouble with today. That creepy little song she'd broke into earlier? She was stubbornly calling it a fluke.

... And in no way thinking about it too hard while she stared into the fire in the pit front of her.

First a shrug, then Effy added, "Suppose I can't complain." Well, neither she nor anyone she knew hadn't almost died lately; little voices in her head were dulled to a murmur for the most part... Comparative contentment.

"Been quiet. I'm just... enjoying it." Doubtful it'd last.

"It is nice. Relaxing." Leda nodded. She wasn't averse to some excitement usually, but it was nice to take a break.

"In some ways." The quiet itself was relaxing, but-- "Sort of leaves you wondering if it's calm before a storm." Around here, that seemed to be the way it went, and Effy was somewhat of a pessimist.

"Well I'd be worried if nothing was going on. But,

Don't, stop, thinkin' about tomorrow.
Don't stop, it'll soon be here."

She cleared her throat, and waited to see if anything else was coming. But that appeared to be all of that song she knew or something.

"But there's that."

"It'll be better than before,
Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone." Effy finished for her.

Then she pulled a face. There was that, yes. She was not impressed, no.

"I've done better today. One time I actually had an invisible choir backing me up. Possibly a full orchestra too but I wasn't listening closely enough to tell for sure." Leda said wryly.

Effy huffed a sort of laugh, and shook her head. "Apparently, more of a solo act here." Actually grateful for that right now.

"How much have you done?"

"Let's see, three or four full songs, and a bunch of little snippets like what we just did."

Suddenly, kind of grateful for her one little outburst.

"Making me wish I kept duct tape." For herself, not Leda.

"Me I just wished I had earplugs for anyone within earshot." Leda smirked. Actually her voice wasn't that bad.

Or that. Effy smirked.

"Course, this island isn't that organised." Makes them sing, doesn't provide a handy supply of earplugs and gagging material. "And neither are we." Her voice was by no means perfect. A little too rough on the edges to be the best. At least she was in tune, though.
