Dorms Gym - Saturday Night

A bored Jack McCallister was not a happy Jack McCallister. Thankfully, he was good at keeping himself busy. He hadn't had any Saturday night plans (as usual lately) so when the crawl on his skin that came with restlessness appeared, he made a snap decision to do something. Jack bounced the basketball against the court floor a few times before shooting the ball at the hoop. It hit the backboard and the ring before falling through the net.

Yep, shooting hoops on a Saturday night. How exciting. As Jack retrieved the ball, he silently acknowledged that he really needed to make more local friends.

The odd thwonk-thwonk sound dragged George over to the gym. He didn't have much of a clue what was going on, but the noise was too intriguing to be ignored and he found himself leaning against the door frame to watch the kid throw the ball through the net. There seriously had to be more to this game. Hockey was way better.

Jack didn't realize he was being watched until he went to retrieve the ball again and was facing the exit. "Hey," he said, bouncing the ball.

"D'ye win when yer playin' yerself?" George asked, the question both honest and slightly teasing.

"I get to not be bored. I count that as a win," Jack replied. "Though I don't know if only shooting at the hoop counts as playing. More practice."

"Show me how, an' we could make a game out of it," George replied, heading into the gym. "Then we both get t'not be bored."

He didn't need time to consider the offer. He bounced the ball at the kid and got into a defensive position. "Never played basketball?"

He grabbed the ball, turning it in his hands to look it over for a moment before bouncing it experimentally. The thwonk was the same. Weird noise. "Nope, not from around here or nothin'," he explained. "'M George Cooper. What d'we do here?"

"Jack McCallister," he replied. "Put the ball," Jack pointed to it. "Into the basket." He pointed up behind him. "But you can't run with the ball. If you want to move, you have to keep bouncing it."

"Can ye tackle?" he asked, experimentally taking a few steps as he continued the bouncing. "Or check th'cove off th'ball?"

Calvin tended to avoid gyms whenever possible, but Hobbes had taken to throwing those weird cookies at him to get him to vacate the room, and so he was wandering.

Jack was taking a break for a drink when he saw Calvin. He nodded a casual hello since he had his mouth full of water.

Calvin nodded back.

Because that wouldn't make him look like a creeper or anything.

"Bored?" It was a reasonable guess.

"A bit." Translation: 'dangerously so'. "Hobbes kicked me out of the room."

Which meant he was probably planning something.

"Tough roommate. Mine left." Andy was a good guy, but the extra room was nice. "Do you play?" Jack gestured to the basket.

"Only as the ball." Calvin wasn't joking, even when he'd gotten his growth spurt it hadn't done a whole lot..

Jack raised an eyebrow at him. "Is that normal where you come from?"

"Only when the team captain is half-gorilla." Which was really a slur against the noble ape.

"Calvin," George said in greeting, raising his hand a bit. "D'ye play th'basketball?"

"George." Calvin waved back. "Depends on your definition of play."

"'M thinkin' badly counts," he decided.

"A bit then."

"You an' me both," George said, grinning back. "Least it's not on ice, aye?"

"It could be interesting on snow though."

Calvin had An Idea, that never ended well.

"Real snow though, right? An' not th' pastries that're fallin' tonight?"
