A bored Jack McCallister was not a happy Jack McCallister. Thankfully, he was good at keeping himself busy. He hadn't had any Saturday night plans (as usual lately) so when the crawl on his skin that came with restlessness appeared, he made a snap decision to do something. Jack bounced the basketball against the court floor a few times before shooting the ball at the hoop. It hit the backboard and the ring before falling through the net.

Yep, shooting hoops on a Saturday night. How exciting. As Jack retrieved the ball, he silently acknowledged that he really needed to make more local friends.

Okaaaaay. People like Jack and Calvin didn't usually cross paths in life, but thanks to his mother, Jack was used to dealing with strange people. He offered the ball. "Why don't you use this? Take a shot."

Jack watched as it hit a pole and rolled back towards them. He glanced back at Calvin. "Not a sports guy," he remarked.

"I'm not really into organised sports," Calvin admitted. "Except for Calvinball."

Which didn't really count as organised.

"Calvinball," Jack repeated. He was about to say that he didn't know that one, then he stopped. "You're Calvin, aren't you?"

Calvin nodded, grinning.

"Do you need a gorilla to play Calvinball?"

"Definitely not."

"That's a relief. What makes Calvinball so different to basketball?"

"The fact it's only the greatest game ever."

"Aren't you biased making that statement?"

"Not at all."

"Then I'll have to take your word for it." He knew when to let it go. "How do you play Calvinball?"

"First you need a mask."

"Like a goalie mask?"

"Like a mask mask."

"You'll have to be more specific."

Calvin gestured over his eyes. "A mask that hides your face."

"One of those masks," Jack realized, not really sure where this was going. "Normally masks in sports are for protection, not for," he trailed off. "What are the masks for?"

"Don't question the masks."

"The masks are for not questioning. Got it. Is this going to take long?"

"Calvinball takes as long as it needs to," Calvin explained sagely. "Now the first and most important rule of Calvinball is that you cannot play the same way twice."

"You mean you can't repeat a play within the same game?" Jack's efforts to translate Calvin-talk into a language he understood were determined, but futile.
