The sixth floor had been transformed into a proper Winter Wonderland, complete with twinkling lights adorning the walls, and... snow?

Yes, snow. Inside. Don’t ask how it got here. Or why it wasn’t melting despite the fact that the room itself was a comfortable temperature. If someone did ask, the only answer they’d get was a mysterious smile from Karla and a slight waggle of her fingers. Whatever conclusion they wanted to draw from that was fine.

But it wouldn’t be a party without the food, of course, which is why there were several tables with all sorts of (vegetarian-friendly) snacks and drinks, and, yes, a cake. Made by Sookie and not either of the two people organizing this party. ~~Which meant it was safe for human consumption~~. Speakers hidden behind fake trees were playing soft New Agey music, with a few instrumental holiday carols thrown in. Even some of the tinsel from yesterday had been saved and used to decorate.

Come in, relax, and help the birthday girl celebrate her first party in style.

"I suppose I can behave then," Karla said with an exaggerated sigh. "For Raven's sake."

She gave Jono a sideways glance. "Sorry we didn't find you in time to get you involved," she said. "This was kind of last minute."

Jonothon shrugged a little bit.

//This just means that I'll have to find some way to outdo you next year,// he replied. //I think I can manage, somehow.//

Karla and Bobby might have snow, but he had a teammate back in Massachusetts who was a living fireworks factory. He'd just have to suck up to Lee. A lot.

"That's a competition I can get behind," Karla agreed. "If it means Raven keeps getting progressively better parties."

She also liked that Jono was making plans for Raven for next year. It warmed her a little inside. And reminded her of something...

"Jono, do you think we can catch up sometime soon? I have to talk to you about something." Wait. That sounded ominous. "Nothing bad!" Wait. That might not be true. "I don't think?"

//... You don't think?//

Jono was feeling the ominousness, right there. See him worry, Karla? He was good at it. He was made to worry.

//I've got... no life, really, now that school's let out. Catch me at Groovy Tunes, perhaps? Or another time, if that doesn't work.//

"Groovy Tunes might work," Karla said thoughtfully, though now she was wondering if maybe she shouldn't wait until after the holiday all together. She gave him her best unsure-but-game smile and added, "Don't worry. I'm not going to interrogate you about intentions the way Raven did to Warren when we first started dating."

There. That would help.

//... If you did, I would have to question how well you actually know me,// Jono offered, raising an eyebrow. //Anyhow, Professor Skywalker already beat you to that conversation.//

"I trust you," Karla said, shrugging. "Having a conversation where I get all huffy and overprotective would just be a waste of time."

Morton.

"You're not going to intentionally hurt her if you can help it and unintentionally? You're probably gonna make yourself feel worse about it than I ever could."

//See. You do know me well.//

Honestly. Jono had been making himself feel bad about things already. That was just the way that he was made.

//Do I at least get some sort of hint about th'nature of this thing you want to talk about wot might be bad, or might not be, you 'don't think?'//

Karla gave that a moment of thought. "I'd like your honest opinion about a course of action," she said slowly, choosing her words with care. "And...something akin to a...favor maybe? But not from you. It's hard to explain without going into details."

Really, now. The curiosity was going to kill him, at this rate.

//Something akin to a favour maybe,// he echoed, and then shook his head a bit. //Well, no sense trying to drag it out of you here, I suppose. Tuesday, Groovy Tunes. Unless you catch me before.//

"Nooo..." Karla said, trying not to look horrified. "Not here, no."

Somehow, that just didn't feel like the most appropriate venue, sorry.

He was trying not to look concerned, himself, now.

"I'll probably shoo any squirrels away, but there's a difference between a music shop and Raven's first birthday party," Karla said.

Then tried to be reassuring again. "It really isn't that bad? Ish?"

She was bad at this.

//You know, th'more you say that, th'more worried I get,// Jonothon mused. //Fine, then. It'll wait until Tuesday. But if you keep trying to make me worry less about it, I'm ushering you into a closet or something and making you spit it out then and there.//

"I'll be quiet," Karla said, a little contritely. "It's nothing that won't keep till Tuesday, Jono, really. You have a good party with Raven and we'll talk then."
